Director of Communications

Flock•Washington, DC
•$182,300 - $243,000

About The Position

Flock is seeking a seasoned strategic communications leader to own the company’s Washington, DC and policy narrative. This is a senior, high-visibility individual-contributor role reporting to the VP of Communications. The role complements the existing communications and government affairs teams and requires both strategic judgment and hands-on execution. The hire will manage external resources and agencies and may also support crisis, corporate, and product communications as needed. The Director will build and maintain relationships with Beltway reporters, prepare the company for congressional scrutiny, connect policy developments to communications strategy, and handle daily media and executive communications. Close coordination with Government Affairs and Legal is essential. The role calls for clear, transparent, high-impact messaging, proactive narrative-shaping, and the ability to write, strategize, and execute directly while helping develop sound judgment within the team.

Requirements

  • 8–10 years of communications, media relations, or PR leadership experience, with a heavy focus on DC, congressional issues and hearings, and policy communications.
  • Strong judgment and leadership skills across corporate and other communications issues.
  • Executive presence and experience media-training and advising C-suite leaders.
  • Existing relationships with DC and Beltway press, or the resourcefulness and willingness to build those relationships quickly.
  • Ability to deliver clear, transparent, high-impact messaging.
  • Hands-on approach: able to advise, make calls, draft responses, and carry communications work through to execution.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with Beltway reporters, including at POLITICO, Semafor, Axios, Puck, and Punchbowl; understand their coverage interests and provide substantive information about Flock, its products, and safeguards.
  • Work with Government Affairs and Legal to anticipate congressional questions and prepare facts, messaging, and response processes before inquiries or letters arrive.
  • Track policy proposals and congressional actions that could affect the business or generate coverage, and translate them into guidance for leadership, reporter outreach, and executive preparation.
  • Draft media responses, brief reporters, prepare executives, follow up, and monitor developing stories.
  • Collaborate closely with Government Affairs and Legal to align internal and external communications.
  • Shape the policy narrative proactively rather than only responding to press inquiries.
  • Write, strategize, and execute communications work directly, while growing and supporting the team’s judgment in high-stakes media environments.
  • Manage external resources and agencies.
  • Potentially support crisis, corporate, and product communications as needed.
