About The Position

Tolan is a personal AI designed to be a friend that remembers what's important to users and helps them move from reflection to action, guiding them back to their real lives. The company has built a community of over 100,000 women who use Tolan to help manage work, parenting, and busy households. This role is crucial for telling the story of both the Tolan product and the company's position at the forefront of a significant social shift in human-AI relationships. The communications director will convey an optimistic, evidence-based narrative, highlighting research showing Tolan's measurable impact on reducing user anxiety and improving wellbeing. The role demands a blend of strategic narrative-setting and hands-on execution, involving pitching to publications and building owned media channels.

Requirements

  • Experience building consumer brands, particularly those appealing to millennial women.
  • Proven ability to generate attention and impact with limited budgets or small teams.
  • Senior-level strategic thinking combined with hands-on execution capabilities.
  • Proficiency in both earned and owned media strategies.
  • Demonstrated success in placing stories in national outlets and building channels for ongoing content.
  • Ability to provide specific examples of coverage placed and assets built, with leadership credited.
  • Exceptional candidates with a strong portfolio, even without a traditional communications background, are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Own the narrative by working with the CEO and founders to define Tolan's identity and significance.
  • Craft messaging suitable for diverse publications like Call Her Daddy and The Atlantic.
  • Maintain a user-centric focus in all communications.
  • Drive earned media by building relationships with journalists, editors, and producers across various sectors (lifestyle, culture, tech, mental health, entertainment) to secure coverage in outlets like The New York Times and segments like The Drew Barrymore Show.
  • Land stories about Tolan and the evolving relationship between people and AI, establishing the Tolan Research Team as a trusted source.
  • Expand reach beyond major media hubs to regional outlets, women's magazines, podcast networks, and faith-adjacent media.
  • Connect with the Tolan community to share stories of how the product has improved users' lives.
  • Build owned media assets, including original video, podcasts, and editorial content, to tell Tolan's story in its own voice.
  • Maintain a consistent output of original content to keep Tolan in the cultural conversation between press opportunities.
