About The Position

The College of Visual Arts and Design (CVAD) at the University of North Texas (UNT) is seeking a Director of Communications, Marketing and Public Relations to provide strategic leadership for college-level marketing, communications, and public relations. The Director develops and implements an integrated communications strategy that advances the college’s priorities, strengthens its visibility and reputation, and supports student recruitment, engagement, advancement, and community outreach. The Director oversees CVAD communications across multiple platforms and formats, including the college website, social media, newsletters, press releases, advertising, donor and recruitment materials, publications, short-form video, and other print and digital content. The position creates and edits clear, compelling, and audience-focused communications and identifies opportunities to share the accomplishments and impact of CVAD students, faculty, staff, alumni, programs, and partners. Working closely with UNT’s University Brand Strategy and Communications (UBSC), the Director ensures that CVAD communications align with university branding, communication standards, institutional priorities, and applicable policies. The position requires exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, project-management, and organizational skills, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. The Director is responsible for ensuring that web, digital, print, and multimedia communications meet institutional policies and accessibility requirements, including ADA compliance. Additional responsibilities include cultivating media and campus relationships, researching marketing opportunities and best practices, supporting major college events and initiatives, and supervising student employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in related field and five years of experience in writing and/or editing publications; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Ability to develop and implement integrated, audience-focused communications and marketing strategies across print, digital, web, social media, video, broadcast, and emerging platforms.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and oral communication skills, with knowledge of Associated Press and Chicago Manual styles.
  • Ability to fact-check and review print and digital materials for accuracy, clarity, consistency, quality, accessibility, and alignment with institutional standards.
  • Ability to understand college and university priorities and translate them into effective communications for varied audiences.
  • Thorough knowledge of digital accessibility and ADA requirements, with the ability to ensure compliance with university and state policies and guidelines.
  • Ability to research, evaluate, and apply industry trends and best practices while maintaining institutional standards.
  • Strong project-management skills, including the ability to establish priorities, coordinate complex projects, manage multiple deadlines, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to collaborate with all internal and external stakeholders, exercise sound judgment, and maintain productive professional relationships.
  • Ability to supervise, mentor, and coordinate the work of student employees and other contributors.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements an integrated marketing, communications, and public relations strategy that advances CVAD priorities and supports recruitment, engagement, advancement, and institutional visibility.
  • Creates, writes, edits, and schedules accurate and engaging content for the CVAD website, social media, newsletters, advertising, press releases, publications, videos, and other print and digital communications.
  • Attends college events, conducts interviews, and researches stories to highlight the accomplishments and impact of the CVAD community.
  • Oversees the planning, production, and timely delivery of college publications, campaigns, and communications projects.
  • Manages editorial calendars, production and printing schedules, project workflows, and coordination with vendors and campus partners.
  • Manages CVAD’s website and social media presence, ensuring that content is current, responsive to audience needs, accessible, and aligned with university standards.
  • Monitors audience engagement, responds or directs inquiries appropriately, and addresses inaccurate information when needed.
  • Builds and maintains productive relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, campus partners, community organizations, and local, regional, state, and national media.
  • Collaborates with UBSC to ensure alignment with university strategy, branding, policies, and media relations practices.
  • Researches communications trends, audience needs, and marketing opportunities; recommends strategies to strengthen CVAD’s reach and effectiveness; supports major college events and special initiatives; and supervises and mentors student employees and other communications contributors.
