About The Position

The North Carolina League of Municipalities is recruiting a Director of City Relations. This position will support the League’s Government Affairs and Technical Services work with North Carolina cities and towns. The position will require extensive travel and require extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience advocating on legislative issues affecting North Carolina cities and towns
  • Deep knowledge of municipal operations
  • Ability to manage stressful interactions with tact and professionalism
  • At least 15 years of experience in municipal legislative advocacy and operations
  • Willingness to travel
  • Proven skill, judgment, integrity, and expertise in navigating municipal and legislative issues

  • Experience speaking to both small and large audiences
  • Ability to write editorials, journals, speeches, manuals, or critiques

Responsibilities

  • Making significant contributions to Government Affairs programming and initiatives
  • Leading member-focused advocacy efforts
  • Providing technical assistance and consulting to cities and towns, including guidance for elected and appointed officials on complex technical and legislative issues
  • Providing training, education, and presentations to city officials and other relevant audiences
  • Aligning diverse internal teams toward shared strategic objectives
  • Cultivating high-trust partnerships
  • Creating and executing grassroots strategies for city officials and meeting with city elected and appointed officials to advise on complex government relations and related matters
  • Developing and executing strategies with other League departments to help member cities use League services and resources effectively
