About The Position

The Director of Casualty Underwriting is a strategic leadership role responsible for the underwriting profitability, appetite, guidelines, and portfolio performance of assigned casualty lines of business. This position provides enterprise-wide underwriting direction, develops and maintains underwriting rules and tools, and partners with business leaders to drive sound risk selection, pricing excellence, and long-term profitable growth. The Director collaborates closely with the Chief Underwriting Officer, underwriting leadership, field operations, and enterprise partners to monitor market trends, identify emerging risks and opportunities, and align underwriting strategies across business segments. Serving as a subject matter expert, this leader oversees underwriting philosophies and authority structures, supports training and development initiatives, and works with regional underwriting teams to evaluate and capitalize on business opportunities.

Requirements

  • 10 years advanced underwriting technical experience preferred
  • Insurance designations; CPCU, AU Series preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred

Responsibilities

  • Ownership of all underwriting guidance and rules for assigned lines of business.
  • Will work closely with CUO and other Directors on authority triggers related to any guidelines they are supplying.
  • Understand and manage capacities for terror/weather with Risk Office & Field Operations.
  • Take part in P&C and Anniversary reviews as needed.
  • Create and update tools to help underwriters make better risk selection and pricing decisions for assigned lines.
  • Partner with internal functional groups to conduct financial analysis in order to anticipate industry trends, seize strategic opportunities and recognize threats while balancing short-term and long-term investments for countrywide book management.
  • Monitor performance, develop, and communicate underwriting philosophies, strategies and financial results to internal/external partners, as well as team members.
  • Serve as SME for projects and work efforts impacting assigned line of business.
  • Coordinate with other Underwriting Directors to align appetite across lines, where appropriate.
  • Build relationships with relevant external groups, and professional organizations (ISO, NCCI, NYIA, etc.)
  • Help develop and implement training programs to be delivered to the field.
  • Work with the Regional Underwriting Leadership and their teams to provide line-level expertise and assistance in evaluation of opportunities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
