About The Position

The Director of Care (DOC) is a skilled and compassionate leader who oversees the delivery of exceptional, resident-centered care in a long-term care home. The DOC manages all aspects of care operations, ensuring best practices aligned with Extendicare standards, accreditation requirements, and provincial regulations. Leading and inspiring an engaged team is essential to achieving an excellent resident experience. Building strong, trust-based relationships with residents and families is also key to satisfaction and fulfilling our mission to provide care wherever people call home. This is a temporary position for 3 months.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (Master’s preferred)
  • Current, unrestricted RN registration with the applicable provincial body
  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, including 2+ years in a leadership role (LTC or healthcare setting)
  • Strong knowledge of long-term care regulations and best practices
  • Proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams
  • Experience driving quality improvement initiatives and achieving positive outcomes
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) and related technology

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team environment
  • Ensure staff receive required training and support ongoing professional development
  • Manage staffing in line with the Extendicare care model and legislated hours; support budgeting and variance analysis
  • Ensure adherence to healthcare regulations, licensing standards, and employment legislation
  • Identify and address resident care issues, mitigate risks, and respond promptly to critical incidents
  • Respond to feedback with empathy and professionalism
  • Oversee assessments and individualized care planning based on resident needs and preferences
  • Work closely with leadership, staff, residents, and families to optimize care delivery
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives focused on safety, wellness, and satisfaction
  • Develop operational plans aligned with home-level clinical priorities
  • Engage vendors and community health partners to enhance care and training
  • Promote the organization’s Mission, Vision, and Values with integrity and ethical leadership
