About The Position
The Brenda Strafford Foundation (BSF) is a charitable organization that owns and operates five Aging Care & Senior Living communities in Calgary, AB, and Okotoks, AB. BSF also operates Alberta’s largest second-stage shelter providing safe shelter and comprehensive support services to women and children leaving abuse and violence. The Director of Care will lead exceptional clinical staff and ensure the highest standard of care for residents, collaborating with a dynamic team, fostering continuous improvement, and contributing to the foundation's mission. This role oversees the delivery of nursing services on a 24-hour basis, ensuring quality care in compliance with regulations and standards, and works closely with the Executive Director and other professionals to manage resources and advocate for residents. The Director of Care will shape the strategic direction of the foundation, upholding values of person-centered care, safety, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) or equivalent.
- A minimum of five years of clinical experience in geriatric nursing, with previous supervisory and management experience.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and engage a diverse team.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships with residents, families, staff, and external partners.
- Proficiency in using nursing management systems and tools such as RAI MDS 2.0, CAPS, RUGs, and quality improvement indicators.
- Knowledge of infection control practices, safety standards, and healthcare regulations.
- A commitment to promoting a culture of safety, ethical practice, and continuous improvement.
- A criminal record check is required for successful candidates.

Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and motivate the nursing team & healthcare staff to achieve optimal resident outcomes.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that promotes teamwork, respect, and open communication.
- Develop and implement strategies to ensure infection control and maintain a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment.
- Serve as a clinical resource, guiding staff to provide exceptional care.
- Partner with the Administrator to manage the nursing department budget and resource allocation.
- Participate in recruitment and training initiatives to ensure the nursing staff is well-equipped and supported in their roles.
- Oversee performance evaluations and manage staff development and disciplinary actions.
- Ensure the accuracy of clinical records and documentation in line with legislative requirements.
- Work closely with physicians and other healthcare providers to address resident care needs and medical initiatives.
- Take an active role in quality improvement, including managing clinical indicators and initiating projects to improve care delivery.
- Lead the nursing team in maintaining high standards of care and upholding the Foundation’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
