About The Position

As a vital member of the External Operations team, the Director of Broadcasting and Production is responsible for the live streaming and broadcasting of Penn Athletics events (aka Penn Sports Network or PSN) for the Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletic (DRIA) with the primary purpose of ensuring ESPN+, NCAA, Ivy League and University standards are met. This position will manage broadcasts and related staff for home varsity competitions and special events on ESPN+ and regional sports networks and serve as the primary broadcasting and production contact with ESPN+ and the Ivy League.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience in the area of broadcasting is required.
  • Must be proficient with web streaming software, camera operations (HD & SD), microphones, lighting and related production equipment, & control room equipment.
  • Experience in a professional video editing/producing environment demonstrating competence in all areas of video production.
  • Must be available nights and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Panasonic, NewTek, and video production and broadcast standards of the Ivy League, ESPN, and Comcast/NBC Sports a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, execute and direct live productions for Penn Athletics aired on ESPN+ or regional sports networks, including at newly developed varsity sport broadcast sites for tennis, squash, indoor track & field and swimming & diving.
  • Coordinate production schedules, training, and communication with game-day staff to ensure sufficient coverage for all events.
  • Ensure that home athletic events get on-air and are fully staffed; that production staff can serve as the official video review for all applicable sports; and that all cameras, on-site setups, transmission paths, and feeds are functioning properly for each broadcast.
  • Represent DRIA in production meetings and planning sessions for events that require stream or audio/video services.
  • Coordinate with Marketing, Communications, Operations, IT and Facilities on live streaming and broadcast logistics, including reporting infrastructure and related issues prior to, during, and after events.
  • Test all production equipment and associated in-venue video board interfaces before all scheduled events and broadcasts.
  • Support Marketing game presentation staff in coordinating in-venue entertainment opportunities, such as fan cams.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Video Content on daily operations, equipment and digital asset inventory.
  • Advise DRIA's IT and Facilities staff regarding capital improvements related to PSN.
  • Liaison with ISC (Information Systems & Computing) regarding the University's fiber network/infrastructure, including troubleshooting, repairs, and long-term planning.
  • Serve in various production positions, including on-site point-of-contact, for DRIA sponsored events airing on linear television or other streaming platforms not produced by PSN, including but not limited to football, basketball, lacrosse, soccer Ivy League Championships, Flo Sports and Penn Relays.
  • Manage full-time staff: setting goals, routinely monitoring and documenting performance, and developing them into a vital part of the External Operations team.
  • Train staff and student workers on various production equipment, including but not limited to NewTek TriCaster switchers, AJT graphics system, and NewTek 3-Play replay system.
  • Management of official replay systems for Ivy League and NCAA compliance, including integration into live ESPN+ and linear broadcasts.
  • Provide training to ensure production staff can serve as the official video review for all applicable sports.
  • Maintain a repair and replacement plan for all production equipment.
  • Manage resources and equipment inventory to support live streaming and storage of digital video assets.
  • Routinely report out on ESPN+ viewership data.
  • Prepare annual operating budget and lead long-term planning for PSN.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
