About The Position

The Governor’s Office is seeking a Director of Boards and Commissions to lead and oversee the appointment process for more than 350 boards, commissions, task forces, and committees appointed by the Governor of Colorado. The Director is responsible for directing recruitment and vetting processes, advising the Governor and Governor’s Office Executive Team on appointments, and ensuring appointments align with statutory requirements, executive orders, and the Governor’s priorities. The Director serves as the primary liaison between the Governor’s Office, executive branch agencies, legislative leadership, board members, and community stakeholders regarding appointments, confirmations, and board operations. This role requires exceptional leadership, political acumen, relationship management skills, and the ability to navigate complex and high-profile appointment processes with professionalism and discretion. The Director also provides oversight of the Senate confirmation process for applicable boards and commissions and works to ensure broad stakeholder engagement and diverse representation across appointments statewide. This position provides oversight and guidance related to the Parole Board and Director of the Parole Board.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in government, public administration, public policy, stakeholder engagement, legislative affairs, executive operations, or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills with the ability to oversee complex processes and competing priorities.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong relationship management and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, professionalism, discretion, and political awareness in a high-profile environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt quickly in a fast-paced setting.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with attention to detail.
  • Must be currently employed within the Office of Boards and Commissions.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, political science, communications, business administration, or a related field; graduate-level education is a plus but not required.
  • Supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience working within government, executive offices, legislative affairs, or appointment processes.
  • Experience with Salesforce CRM or similar tracking and data management systems.
  • Familiarity with Colorado statute, legislative processes, and Senate confirmations.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and stakeholders across Colorado.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the appointment process for more than 350 boards, commissions, task forces, and committees appointed by the Governor.
  • Own end-to-end executive search lifecycle: intake meetings, role scoping, research, sourcing, passive candidate outreach, engagement, competency-based evaluation, selection, and offer negotiation as needed for paid boards and commissions.
  • Provide strategic recommendations to the Governor and Governors Office Executive Team regarding appointments.
  • Lead recruitment, outreach, and stakeholder engagement efforts to build diverse applicant pipelines and identify qualified candidates for service.
  • Ensure all appointments comply with applicable statutory requirements, executive orders, and Governor’s Office policies and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with executive directors, agency staff, legislators, legislative staff, and Governor’s Office personnel to support successful appointment and confirmation processes.
  • Oversee and coordinate the Senate confirmation process for applicable appointments, including engagement with legislative leadership, committee staff, and agency liaisons.
  • Respond to and resolve issues related to appointments, board operations, and stakeholder concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Work closely with policy, legislative, and communications teams to ensure the Governor’s priorities are effectively communicated to board members and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with legislative staff and agencies regarding legislation impacting boards and commissions, including newly created boards and commissions.
  • Conduct presentations and outreach efforts across the state to increase public awareness of opportunities to serve on boards and commissions.
  • Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with board contacts, board members, community organizations, and stakeholders throughout Colorado.
  • Oversee office operations, systems, and strategic initiatives for the Office of Boards and Commissions, including Salesforce-based appointment tracking for more than 2,200 gubernatorial appointments.
  • Supervise and support office staff, including providing leadership, mentorship, and operational direction to team members.
  • Provide oversight and guidance related to the Parole Board and Director of the Parole Board.
  • Lead transition coordination efforts related to boards and commissions in preparation for the next administration, including overseeing the documentation of appointment processes, institutional knowledge, and stakeholder relationships to ensure continuity of operations and a seamless transfer of responsibilities.
