About The Position

The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Director of Bi-Literacy & Language to provide strategic leadership and oversight for English Language Instruction, Dual Language Immersion, Developmental Bilingual Education, and Hmong language programs. This role supports the implementation of English Language Arts, Biliteracy (Spanish-English, Hmong-English), Literacy and Biliteracy Interventions, and Social Studies, ensuring alignment with district, state, and national standards and a commitment to culturally and linguistically responsive, anti-racist education. The Director co-leads with other Curriculum & Instruction Directors, works across Central Office departments and community partners, and supervises coordinators and teacher leaders. This is a year-round role with leadership responsibilities for summer school curriculum and instruction.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Educational Administration or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in progressively responsible roles as a school administrator.
  • Central office leadership experience or equivalent education, training, and relevant professional experience are also considered.
  • Demonstrated successful teaching and leadership experience within K-12, differentiated learning environments, working cross-culturally within a diverse population.
  • Strong knowledge of national (CCSS & CCSS en Español), state standards relevant to the content areas, and Science of Reading.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-departmental collaboration, manage complex projects, and communicate effectively across diverse audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including listening, oral and written communication skills.
  • Successful experience with system and organizational development and management of resources.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership, coordination, and oversight for all district-wide curriculum and instruction alignment for content, during school year and summer programming, related to English Language Arts, Biliteracy (e.g. Spanish- English, Hmong-English), Literacy & Biliteracy Intervention, and Social Studies.
  • Lead priorities to embed culturally and linguistically responsive practices across all biliteracy and language programs, ensuring equitable student access and outcomes.
  • Provide strategic leadership in developing, articulating, and implementing curricula and assessment within a multi-tiered system of supports, including collaboration with other C&I Content Directors and central office departments.
  • Create supportive structures for implementation of evidence-based, high-quality instructional materials and resources aligned to the Common Core State Standards, Common Core en Español, Science of Reading and Wisconsin State Standards for Social Studies.
  • Direct the design, development, and implementation of district-wide instructional programs, projects, and activities for English Learners, ensuring alignment with federal and state requirements in core content areas.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and mentor assigned coordinators and teacher leaders, fostering their professional growth and ensuring alignment with district goals.
  • Co-lead and collaborate extensively with other Curriculum & Instruction Directors and Central Office departments (e.g., Special Education, Professional Learning, Assessment, Finance) to ensure seamless integration of language and biliteracy initiatives across the district.
  • Design, develop, lead, and co-facilitate high-quality professional development for central office staff, school administrators, teachers (including bilingual, ESL, and general education teachers), and interventionists in best practices in bi-literacy development (including the Science of Reading), second language acquisition, curriculum implementation, and data-driven instruction.
  • Facilitate, plan, and promote school literacy programs in schools, district, and community, including but not exclusively: tutoring, family events.
  • Coordinate and manage district-wide curriculum adoption.
  • Support schools in creating equitable, rigorous learning environments in English Language Arts, Biliteracy (English-Spanish, English-Hmong), Literacy Interventions, English Language Development, and Social Studies—aligned with the district’s strategic framework and school improvement plans.
  • Utilize multiple sources of data at district, school, and program levels to monitor progress, identify gaps, and inform continuous program improvement and targeted interventions.
  • Collaborate with other departments for decision-making regarding the selection, implementation, and evaluation of assessment tools to guide instructional decisions in multiple languages.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Senior Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction.
  • Represent the department in Board meetings, district initiatives, and community events aligned with MMSD’s strategic plan.
  • Complete all required district training, certifications, and compliance-related responsibilities.
