About The Position

The Director of Behavioral Health (DBH) is a member of the management team and reports to the Chief Healthcare Administrator (CHA). The Director of Behavioral Health (DBH) supervises professional clinical services for mental and substance use disorders to incarcerated persons in correctional facilities under contract with the Heart of Florida Health Center (HFHC). Considerable independent judgment is required for this position and includes direct service and “on-call” responsibilities. The DBH will work collaboratively with the BH team and correctional health management team to provide quality care to patients with mental and substance use disorders and coordinates all BH services under the direction of the Medical Director, Health Services Administrator, and the Chief Healthcare Administrator. The DBH directly supervises all licensed and unlicensed counselors and case managers.

Requirements

  • Clear active Florida license as a clinical social worker or psychologist
  • Master’s or doctoral degree in social work, or doctoral degree in psychology, or acceptable field
  • Current BLS Certificate from an accredited AHA or American Red Cross provider
  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse multidisciplinary team of health care professionals and support staff.
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities and create a climate of teamwork and accountability.
  • Ability to pass Level II background check.
  • Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work.
  • Excellent internal and external customer service skills.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office applications.

  • Experience working in a corrections facility or with persons involved in the criminal or juvenile justice system preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete biopsychosocial assessments which include diagnostics, crisis prevention, victim assessments, risk assessments, and protective factors.
  • Ensure that the assessment is detailed and outlines proper recommendations.
  • Assess inmates on suicide precautions to determine appropriateness for general population or step-down.
  • Assess inmates who complete inmate Medical Request Forms pertaining to Mental Health.
  • Establish and maintain positive, therapeutic, and professional relationships with inmates who are referred for behavioral health services.
  • Efficiently manage walk-ins and unscheduled sessions during the workday.
  • Complete Segregation/Confinement assessments.
  • Evaluate inmate’s behavior, determining the progress made through various treatment programs.
  • Perform crisis intervention as necessary.
  • Maintain daily and accurate completion of all clinical documentation, to include all clinical recommendations.
  • Ensure that treatment is delivered in accordance with the highest ethical and professional standards.
  • Use measurements for general and specific assessments as well as objective patient criteria in the provision of services and evaluation procedures.
  • Assist persons assessed as needing services through providing or arranging for short-term individual or group therapy, crisis intervention, and psychoeducation.
  • Maintain knowledge of community resources for behavioral healthcare and social services.
  • Work closely with case managers to develop individualized post-release plans for ongoing behavioral health care; assist with linkage to services in the community.
  • Effectively utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and psychoeducation, among other clinical skills.
  • In adherence within the limits of patient confidentiality and policies of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, communicate with family members of inmates to ensure appropriate continuity of care.
  • Comply with HIPAA and company’s patient and staff confidentiality laws and policies.
  • Ensure that patients’ rights are protected and report any abuse/neglect to the proper authorities.
  • Communicate and interact with other staff on the jail multidisciplinary team effectively.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, and other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form, which may jeopardize the privacy of patients and/or employees.
  • Access and use the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
