We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Director of Advancement (Hybrid) on our AMA Foundation team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office. The Director of Advancement is a pivotal, dual-function senior leader responsible for driving contributed revenue growth and overseeing strategic marketing initiatives for the organization. This role expertly blends fundraising leadership with marketing oversight, ensuring organizational sustainability, visibility, and engagement with stakeholders. You will build and lead a high-performing development and marketing team, execute data-driven strategies, and shape the external narrative, while partnering with the Executive Director and Board to achieve strategic fundraising objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; Master's degree in non-profit administration or related field preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in non-profit programming.
  • Strong communications, writing, and editing skills to ensure connectivity to mission and appropriate style and usage.
  • Strategic, analytical approach combined with a strong work ethic and interpersonal professionalism.
  • Ability to manage and mentor staff. Proven interpersonal skills with an ability to build capacity in peers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds, interests, and skills.
  • Ability to oversee numerous projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines and take initiative in managing several projects.
  • Solution-oriented critical thinker with strong problem-solving skills and a positive can-do attitude.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Proficiency with Excel required. Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • Some travel is required.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate expertise in moves management by guiding donor engagement, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities; ensure systematic tracking and advancement of donor relationships to maximize philanthropic outcomes.
  • Set and implement annual fundraising goals and manage revenue and expense budgets for Development and marketing departments and Foundation Meetings.
  • Lead efforts to grow annual fund support through major giving, legacy gifts, corporate/foundation grants, events, memberships, and digital giving.
  • Oversee creation of donor proposals, working with Executive Director, Board Development Committee, and AMA colleagues.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and Board Development Chair set and implement special fundraising campaigns.
  • Manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors at the including both individual and institutional sources.
  • Assists Executive Director in Board management, engagement, retention, and recruitment.
  • Create and implement a robust stewardship program for current donors and a cultivation program for prospects.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Sr. Development Officer in executing strategies to raise funds for all AMAF programs and additional philanthropic opportunities.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive reports and assessments to the Board of Directors and Executive Director, including clear recommendations for improvements and enhancements.
  • Develop annual plans and strategies and approaches for communicating and marketing the Foundation’s brand proposition.
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and AMA leadership refine and evolve the Foundation's core messages to ensure organizational consistency.
  • Direct Donor Relations and Communications Manager to develop and implement an overall strategic plan for marketing and communications activities in support of Foundation’s priorities, and to create and refine marketing materials that excite and engage constituents and greater community.
  • Develop yearly media plan and pitch stories, ensure creation and development of marketing and sales materials, and manage the revision/enhancement of the Foundation’s website and all other collateral.
  • Serve as executive editor for the organization’s marketing and collateral pieces including e-newsletters, marketing collateral pieces including rack cards and the Foundation’s online presence.
  • Oversee respective Board Committees; serve as the primary liaison to the Development Committee, as well as regular presence at the Finance and Program Committee meetings.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, contribute to strategic planning initiatives, including development and implementation of Strategic and Implementation Plans, internal and external audits of fundraising and operations, and creation and evaluations of metrics/goals on an ongoing basis.
  • Serve as the liaison between programming and fundraising to ensure cohesive messaging in all communications, donor wishes are being met/executed each fiscal year, data/stories are being properly collected and communicated, and fundraising team has all necessary information for grant proposals and individual donor solicitation. Help identify funding needs and match those needs with potential donors.
  • With Donor Relations and Communications Manager, create and oversee comprehensive stewardship and recognition program for all development programs, including special events.
  • Work with finance team and investment manager to ensure correct net asset allocation to all endowed funds each year, as well as communication to donors on fund performance.
  • Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for four staff.
  • Responsible for setting objectives and evaluating staff performance; ensure staff development and identify opportunities for advancing staff skills and expertise.
  • Oversee the training, mentoring, and attainment of goals of development and marketing team.
