The Nuclear Company•Washington, DC
•$176,000 - $204,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Director of Accounting, Nuclear serves as the controllership lead across The Nuclear Company’s Nuclear businesses, including deployment projects and Services operations. Reporting directly to the Chief Accounting Officer, this role owns the integrity of financial results, month-end close, corporate consolidation handoffs, accounting policy, and internal controls across operating entities, projects, joint ventures, special-purpose vehicles, and acquired businesses. The Director partners with business finance leaders, Corporate Controllership, Technical Accounting, and external auditors to establish scalable processes, integrate acquisitions and new entities, and maintain audit readiness as the business grows. This is a build-and-scale leadership role for a hands-on player-coach who can strengthen accounting capabilities while advancing SOX and internal control over financial reporting readiness. This is a hybrid position based in either the Columbia, South Carolina, or Washington, D.C. office, with the expectation of working in the office three days per week. It is not a remote position. Candidates must live within commuting distance of one of these locations or be willing to relocate.

Requirements

  • 10 or more years of progressive accounting and controllership experience, including a senior accounting leadership role such as Controller, Assistant Controller, or divisional controllership lead.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Strong technical accounting foundation under U.S. GAAP across project-based services businesses and capital-intensive development or construction activities.
  • Experience in a complex, multi-entity environment involving joint ventures, special-purpose vehicles, projects, or acquired businesses.
  • Demonstrated ownership of month-end close, financial reporting, and consolidation into a corporate parent.
  • Experience leading acquisition and purchase accounting activities and integrating acquired businesses onto common systems, policies, processes, and controls.
  • Experience establishing or improving scalable close processes, internal controls, and audit-ready financial reporting capabilities in a growing organization.
  • Ability to lead and develop accounting teams while remaining hands-on and partnering effectively across Finance, FP&A, Legal, Operations, Project Management, and Corporate Development.
  • Must live within commuting distance of Columbia, South Carolina, or Washington, D.C., or be willing to relocate.
  • Ability and willingness to work in the office three days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA and public accounting experience, ideally with a Big Four firm.
  • Experience implementing SOX and internal control over financial reporting requirements or preparing an organization for public-company reporting.
  • Experience within nuclear energy, utilities, construction, infrastructure, industrial services, or another highly regulated sector.
  • Hands-on experience with ERP implementation and integrations of third-party applications into ERPs; NetSuite experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of Nuclear financial results, project reporting, month-end close, and reporting into corporate consolidation; align close calendars, accounting policies, reporting requirements, and consolidation handoffs with the Corporate Controller.
  • Ensure consistent application of U.S. GAAP across service contracts, development and capital projects, joint ventures, special-purpose vehicles, and acquired businesses. Lead accounting for revenue recognition under ASC 606; project and development costs under ASC 720 and ASC 340; construction in progress, capitalization, and impairment under ASC 360; consolidation under ASC 810; power purchase agreements under ASC 606 or ASC 842; and intercompany transactions.
  • Establish reliable accounting and reporting for deployment projects, new entities, partnerships, and Services businesses, maintaining clear ownership of accounting policy, controls, and reporting while partnering with Finance, FP&A, and Operations.
  • Lead accounting diligence for acquisitions and purchase accounting, including opening balance sheets, identification and valuation of intangible assets, and post-acquisition adjustments. Integrate acquired businesses into company policies, close processes, control environment, and reporting structure.
  • Integrate new and acquired businesses into the company’s ERP and finance systems, including NetSuite and a common chart of accounts. Standardize processes, retire legacy tools, strengthen internal controls, and ensure financial data and documentation meet audit and investor-reporting requirements.
  • Support SOX and internal control over financial reporting implementation by building public-company-level discipline, documentation, controls, and timelines across the Nuclear businesses.
  • Build and develop the Nuclear accounting function as the business grows. Provide leadership and technical direction while remaining hands-on in close, reporting, technical accounting, integration, and process development as needed.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to use AI, technology, and the Nuclear Operating System to automate workflows, enhance decision-making, improve processes, and contribute to the evolution of NOS.
