About The Position

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Accounting to lead the accounting and financial reporting functions of a growing financial institution. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), this role is responsible for the design, implementation, and oversight of accounting procedures and financial reporting processes in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), regulatory guidance, and industry best practices. The Director of Accounting will prepare, analyze, and review financial data, direct the preparation of management and regulatory reports, and provide leadership and guidance to the Accounting Department. This position plays a critical role in ensuring financial accuracy, regulatory compliance, and sound internal controls.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field is required.
  • Minimum of five years of accounting experience in a bank or credit union environment is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience preparing audited financial statements and regulatory reports.
  • Proven leadership and staff management experience.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and professionalism.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, evaluate, and develop Accounting Department staff.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for presentation to the Board of Directors.
  • Analyze variances from budget and prior periods and provide meaningful financial insights.
  • Design and implement accounting procedures, work papers, and internal controls in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate the preparation of financial data and supporting documentation for external audits and regulatory examinations.
  • Review and authorize accounts payable disbursements to ensure proper approvals and account classifications.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts.
  • Prepare and review regulatory reports filed with governing agencies.
  • Review monthly accruals, journal entries, and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Prepare and coordinate financial reports and supporting schedules used in audited financial statements.
  • Review reports and schedules prepared by accounting staff.
  • Participate in management planning, profitability analysis, and Asset/Liability Management Committee activities.
  • Serve as a resource to management and staff by providing accounting expertise and process guidance.
  • Research and resolve complex accounting and financial reporting issues.
  • Review asset, liability, and capital account reconciliations and correct discrepancies.
  • Coordinate data collection and supporting schedules for specialized audits, including sales and use tax audits.
  • Maintain current knowledge of accounting standards, regulatory changes, and industry developments.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
