About The Position

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director of Advising at Great Basin College (GBC) provides leadership and direction for all student advising services and advising communications. The Director develops and implements advising models that support students’ academic, career, and developmental needs and builds collaborative relationships across Student Services, Communications (Marketing), and Academic Affairs to ensure a seamless student experience from admission through graduation. This position contributes directly to retention and student-success planning by using data, research, and best practices to strengthen advising outcomes. The Director of Academic Advising is an on-site position in Elko, Nevada.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree and three (3) years of student-facing professional experience in higher education (e.g., student life, student success, or advising), or a bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of student-facing professional experience in those areas.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and intermediate level computer proficiency.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of complex and varied student/ client needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work both independently and collaboratively with various university personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising Advising Services Staff Leads, selects, supervises, directs, and evaluates personnel assigned to the department.
  • Conducts new employee orientation and training and sets work priorities to meet departmental objectives.
  • Supervises advising staff and retention coordinators located across multiple campuses.
  • Assigns and adjusts staff caseloads at the start of each term.
  • May develop or assist with managing grants that support department operations.
  • Leads the design and implementation of advising strategies that promote student success, in collaboration with departments and Centers across GBC.
  • Partners with Admissions & Records and Communications (Marketing) to develop and implement communication tools (e.g., email, web content, print materials, and outreach).
  • Assists with the implementation and ongoing use of Element 451, GBC’s CRM.
  • Supports new student orientation, registration events, and add/drop processes at the beginning of each semester.
  • Serves as a resource for high school students supporting Dual Enrollment.
  • Collaborates with advising staff at other Nevada public institutions to share practices and support statewide alignment.
  • Develops and delivers a regular schedule of training workshops. Training objectives will align with departmental goals, performance outcomes, and enrollment and retention plans, and will be available to all employees with advising or retention responsibilities.
  • Collaborates with Student Affairs departments to support enrollment and community outreach events (e.g., college fairs, high school visits, information sessions, and community events).
