About The Position

The Hospital seeks a seasoned, transparent, and visionary Director of Nursing/Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to serve as the onsite clinical and operational anchor for the campus. With the impending retirement of the current executive leadership, this individual will serve as the face of the facility, providing stability and servant leadership during a critical period of transition. This is a unique opportunity for a seasoned veteran who possesses the clinical gravity of a CNO and the business acumen of a COO. The successful candidate will be tasked with stabilizing a workforce following key retirements, improving financial viability in a county-owned/system-managed matrix, and fostering a Better Together culture that prioritizes patient safety and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree plus 2 years of additional experience.
  • State of New Mexico Nursing License required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary onsite leader for the hospital, acting as the eyes and ears for the off-campus CEO and providing a visible, stabilizing presence for the employees.
  • In collaboration with the Hospital Chief Executive, ensure the mission, goals, and strategies of Presbyterian Health System (PHS) are implemented through local planning and oversight.
  • Act as the primary liaison to the community and local county officials; represent the hospital in community forums to drive growth and maintain a strong external brand.
  • Navigate the complexities of a county-owned, PHS-managed facility, ensuring that local operational needs are balanced with system-wide standardization.
  • Direct all nursing operations, including the Medical Floor and Emergency Department (ED), ensuring evidence-based practices and superior patient outcomes.
  • Provide administrative direction for Home Health and the Outpatient Clinic, ensuring seamless transitions of care across the local continuum.
  • Maintain the highest standards of safety and quality; coordinate with regulatory agencies and ensure the campus is survey-ready at all times.
  • Maintain a pulse on clinical practice; understand care processes in all service areas and provide point of care leadership as required to support the staff.
  • Plan and monitor the financial activities of all designated departments to address current financial struggles and achieve sustainability.
  • Prepare and manage the annual operating budget, capital allocation plans (including medical equipment/monitoring), and labor productivity.
  • Provide administrative support and accountability for non-nursing functions including Pharmacy, Plant Services, and the Business Office.
  • Utilize process improvement methods to create safe, efficient workflows; champion just culture and C.A.R.E.S. behaviors to drive operational excellence.
  • Lead recruitment and retention efforts following key retirements (Administration, Radiology); build a culture of transparency to boost morale.
  • Direct all human resource activities for the campus; coach and mentor department leaders to build a robust internal leadership pipeline.
  • Serve as the final onsite authority for conflict resolution among staff, physicians, and patients, facilitating effective communication between all parties.
  • Empower staff through the delegation of responsibility and authority, while holding self and others answerable to high performance standards.
