About The Position

The Director Nursing Patient Care Services is responsible for directing clinical operations of ambulatory cancer practice and services within the Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Centers service area. This role provides operational leadership for the clinical and administrative staff and operations of Smilow Care Centers. The Director is accountable for all facets of the operations including managing patient demand and throughput, patient satisfaction, regulatory preparedness, quality improvement, budget and financial outcomes, physician satisfaction, employee satisfaction, and clinical integration. The position is crucial for promoting an operation and culture that focuses on patient and family-centered care, and on enhancing a world-class model of cancer care both operationally and clinically. Requirements

  • Minimum degree in nursing (baccalaureate or graduate). Graduate degree required which may be in a related field if the undergraduate is in nursing.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in healthcare leadership along with significant operational responsibility.
  • Strong leadership skills including demonstrated ability to collaboratively inspire and motivate individuals and groups also being decisive and taking action on critical issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be equally effective with both large and small audiences as well as on a one-on-one level and to a wide range of constituencies.

Responsibilities

  • Direct oversight of oncology nursing practice and programs in the Smilow network, assuring Smilow signature of care throughout the continuum of care. Collaboratively defines models of nursing practice, determines nursing resources and education requirements and assures the highest quality standard for clinical practices across all the assigned departments of Smilow Cancer Hospital.
  • Maintains a collaborative relationship with the leadership of Smilow Cancer Hospital and YNHHS Partners with nursing and provider leadership to continually assess and advance oncology inpatient care delivery, based on changing needs of the patient population. Fosters a collaborative partnership with YNHH Director of Nursing to support inpatient oncology patient services
  • Optimize clinical program results by maintaining internal and external customer service focus; continuously enhance value through performance improvement initiatives and facilitate the expeditious resolution of problems by exercising sound judgment
  • Partners with supportive care programs and interdisciplinary team members to develop, implement, and sustain optimal cancer care delivery
  • Develops and strengthens resources, programs and services with a continuing focus on quality improvement, cost-effectiveness and productivity enhancement.
  • Ensures accountability for high performance in patient experience and achieving patient satisfaction goals
  • Ensures all regulatory standards are communicated, understood and implemented by managers and staff

  • Manages the implementation of processes to collect relevant clinical data to improve patient care
  • Collaborates with Smilow Quality and Safety to execute initiatives to advance patient safety
  • Oversee and facilitate the evaluation of and coordination of process improvements to lead clinical staff performance that consistently exceeds accreditation requirements
  • Provides leadership in supporting the vision of YNHHS nursing and nurses nursing practice is grounding in YNHHS Nursing Professional Practice Model
  • Responsible for developing a culture of professional development of managers and staff.
  • Supports Magnet principles for Smilow and YNHHS
  • Oversees the managers and is responsible for recruiting, mentoring and developing new managers as necessary. Supports the recruitment and development of all staff
  • Addresses problems in a blame-free manner while actively pursuing effective resolutions; utilizing the behaviors and culture of a HRO
  • Leads by example and through collaboration, teamwork, respect, and dignity
  • Motivate and mentor appropriate staff to achieve and insure effective succession throughout management levels
  • Holds self and others responsible for demonstrating YNHH core values
  • Works collaboratively with other department managers to positively influence and develop supervisory personnel for all departments by such means as teaching, coaching, rewarding and mentoring
  • Ensures adequate staffing for safe and effective patient care
  • Establishes processes to ensure that required resources for patient care, e.g., staff, equipment, technology, information, etc are available to meet department priorities
  • Establishes a positive learning environment for students working within the department, cooperating with school programs, while ensuring patient safety
  • Creates and maintains a positive work environment that benefits patients, staff, physicians, and other key stakeholders
  • Partners with the Regional Director and other senior managers to create, implement and manage the strategic direction and long-term plans for Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Centers
  • Responsible for the development and oversight of clinical practices that support and execute the mission and vision of Smilow Cancer Hospital
  • Help promote an organization-wide awareness of and commitment to the mission, vision, and development strategies of Smilow Cancer Hospital
  • Help promote community awareness and support for the long-range development plans of the organization
  • Facilitates communication between all levels of staff and administrative management, serving as the key link to communicate policies, facilitate the exchange of ideas, and ensure the integration of the goals, vision and mission of Smilow
  • Serves as a visible leader, working closely with management, physicians and staff to assure continuous growth, coordination, and integration of clinical activities
  • Partners with Regional Director, physicians and hospital administrators to discuss current and future services. Works collaboratively with physician leadership in accommodating additional volume in support of YNHH strategic goals/initiatives and develops business plans as appropriate to ensure appropriate allocation of resources
  • Demonstrates financial stewardship and expense management. Fiscally responsible for the use of resources. Focuses on and contributes to the enhancement of the financial strength of Smilow to fulfill its long-term mission
  • Functions as a primary driver of Smilow Cancer Hospital non -salary labor reduction initiatives at YNHH. Responsible for administering, analyzing, and reporting on budget variance as part of the overall hospital budget process. Works collaboratively with finance to provide detail on the Cost Center Budget Variance (CCBR) report
  • Ensures accountability for financial, operations, and managerial effectiveness
  • Provides leadership on all initiatives related to YNHHS Corporate Objectives and holds the management team accountable for all Corporate Objectives
  • Acts as a loyal, supportive, and informed leader for the department, Smilow, and YNHHS
  • Identifies areas for self-development and actively seeks opportunities and resources to meet development objectives
  • Through exceptional leadership, innovation, and commitment, develops a team of highly skilled managers and staff who work together to achieve Patient Services goals
  • Provides leadership to managers and staff in a collaborative environment that offers job satisfaction, recognition, and career development
  • Participates in YNHH committees as appropriate to represent the Smilow Cancer Hospital

  • The Director interacts primarily with the following external interface physicians, patients families and visitors
  • The Director interacts secondarily with the following external interfaces: Professional Counterparts, Vendors/suppliers, Non-affiliated hospital leaders where Smilow patients receive care, Educational and Regulatory Organizations
  • The Director interacts primarily with the following internal interfaces: Unit/department managers, Staff in assigned functional areas, Peer Directors and Division/Department Executives
  • The Director interacts secondarily with the following internal interfaces: other Smilow, DN, YNHHS leaders, other hospital staff
  • Directors have the authority to execute the vision, objectives, and strategies consistent with the hospital/health system mission and policy. They determine how resources are deployed within their area of responsibility and they determine the need for additional resources where indicated
  • They have the authority to advocate change in processes and systems to ensure safe and high quality patient care. They work with the mangers to resolve management and health care team member issues within agreed upon financial and regulatory limits
  • The Director oversees the enforcement of policy, as well as make recommendations for policy changes to hospital/health system leadership. They coach and mentor leaders in their departments. They monitor and document management performance, and make recommendation for advancement
  • Directors represent YNHH/YNHHS and the clinical patient services team they manage
