About The Position

The Mechanical Construction Director leads mechanical construction delivery across a portfolio of projects, overseeing HVAC, plumbing, piping, refrigeration, and related building systems. This role is accountable for end-to-end project execution—ensuring safety, quality, schedule, and budget performance—while driving operational excellence and continuous improvement. The Director partners closely with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients to deliver compliant, high-performing facilities on time and within approved scope.

Requirements

Mechanical construction expertise: Strong working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, piping, refrigeration, BAS/DDC controls, and mechanical construction methods and sequencing.
Program and project leadership: Proven ability to lead a portfolio of projects, align cross-functional stakeholders, and deliver results across scope, schedule, cost, and quality.
Budgeting and financial acumen: Experience building and managing construction budgets, forecasting, controlling costs, and administering change orders and contractor payments.
Compliance and risk management: Demonstrated capability to enforce safety and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, refrigerant handling) and to stop/correct noncompliant work.
Vendor and contractor management: Track record of selecting, managing, and holding contractors accountable to performance, quality, and cost expectations.
People leadership: Ability to recruit, coach, mentor, and develop high-performing teams; build engagement; and plan for succession.
Operational excellence mindset: Strong analytical skills, continuous improvement orientation, and ability to standardize processes while adapting to non-prototypical conditions.
Communication and partnership: Clear, executive-level communication skills and the ability to build effective internal and external partnerships.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, or a related field and 5 years' experience in construction management, construction administration, engineering, architecture, or a related area OR 7 years' experience in construction management, construction administration, engineering, architecture, or a related area.

Responsibilities

Lead portfolio execution: Direct multiple mechanical construction projects by defining scope and schedules, coordinating contractors and internal stakeholders, monitoring progress, and ensuring timely issue resolution.
Own budget and cost controls: Develop and manage pre-construction and construction budgets; track monthly/quarterly performance; manage scope, contingency, and forecasts; and review/approve contractor payments, invoices, and change orders within authorized limits.
Ensure quality delivery: Establish quality standards and construction methods; conduct site visits and field observations; resolve coordination issues across systems; and approve necessary design changes during construction to meet budget, timeline, and quality expectations.
Drive safety and regulatory compliance: Set performance standards and enforce compliance with applicable laws and regulations (including OSHA, ICE requirements, refrigerant handling requirements) and company policies; suspend noncompliant work; correct deficiencies; and maintain required certifications.
Provide strategic direction: Translate business objectives and customer needs into actionable strategies, plans, and practices; evaluate operational processes; measure outcomes; and identify and implement improvement opportunities.
Guide cross-functional teams and standards: Provide leadership on prototypes and design initiatives; advise on non-standard applications of construction guidelines; and stay current on industry best practices.
Build and develop talent: Attract, develop, and retain a highly skilled team through recruiting, mentorship, workforce development, and succession planning.
Manage contractor selection and performance: Set selection standards; optimize service quality and fees; manage spend relative to vendor revenue; and incorporate supplier diversity initiatives.
Enable sustainability outcomes: Incorporate sustainability elements into project design (e.g., variable frequency drives and other energy-reduction measures); gather feedback from Operations and associates; and share results with design partners.
Support mechanical services delivery: Lead and support the Mechanical Services team by reviewing designs/permits, bid readiness, schedules, closeout documentation, punch lists, testing and inspection reports; coordinate across internal/external partners; and resolve conflicts.
Protect integrity and ethics: Embed integrity and ethical practices into daily operations and decision-making and support an open, respectful environment.
