About The Position

The Director, Marketing serves as Carnegie Hall’s lead marketing strategist, responsible for developing and executing integrated marketing strategies that advance the institution’s mission, strengthen its brand, and achieve revenue and recruitment goals. This includes the annual concert season, education and social impact programs of the Weill Music Institute (WMI), incremental earned revenue, and institutional brand-building initiatives. This individual is an exceptional team leader and motivator, skilled at managing, coaching, and delegating to a multi-disciplinary team. They foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing environment where team members and colleagues feel supported, empowered, and aligned around shared goals. The Director brings a proactive, data-informed, and audience-centered approach to marketing, ensuring that all campaigns have measurable impact. The Director acts as a cross‑functional thought partner, engaging with colleagues to align strategies and advance shared goals. In collaboration with the Chief Marketing Officer, they help guide long‑range marketing strategy and ensure that institutional decision‑making is informed by audience insights and strategic perspective.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated excellence as a team leader and motivator, with significant experience managing, coaching, and delegating to a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to successfully share campaign strategies and vision, lead inclusive conversations and brainstorms, and cultivate idea-sharing across teams. Track record of meeting or beating revenue targets.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively and respectfully internally and externally.
  • A desire to experiment and explore emerging marketing tactics and platforms.
  • Proven ability to adapt quickly to new technologies, leveraging innovative tools and approaches.
  • Previous experience evaluating reports and data mining in Tessitura.
  • Self-motivated and independent thinker; ability to negotiate conflicting priorities and obtain results.
  • Ten or more years of proven experience as a team leader, as well as developing marketing strategies, implementing plans, and media buying across channels.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, follow-up, and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to project manage across multiple stakeholders and timelines.
  • Commitment to Carnegie Hall’s mission. Knowledge of and/or interest in all genres of music.
  • Occasional weekends and evenings required.

Responsibilities

  • Shape marketing strategy and lead the operational execution of that strategy across all business lines.
  • Lead annual and multi-year marketing planning, integrating revenue goals, audience objectives, and institutional priorities.
  • Lead annual marketing budget planning. Oversee budget spend and optimization.
  • Oversee digital marketing efforts and media placements, including negotiation and placement of paid media across digital and traditional channels, with the support of media agencies where applicable.
  • Partner with the Chief Marketing Officer to evolve and strengthen Carnegie Hall’s brand strategy, ensuring consistent messaging, visual identity, and audience experience.
  • Embrace and lead marketing support of new artistic initiatives, programs, or business lines as needed.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of multi-channel marketing campaigns for Carnegie Hall concert season across all venues, driving subscription and single ticket revenue, achieving targets of $20m annually.
  • Lead revenue projections, dynamic pricing oversight, and inventory management. Achieve the highest possible revenue and maximize inventory utilization.
  • Identify audience growth opportunities and develop targeted approaches to expand reach and deepen participation, for ticketed and free events on and off-site.
  • Ensure messaging and creative direction align with artistic priorities and institutional brand standards.
  • Oversee marketing support for additional business lines, including merchandise, tour ticket sales, and Carnegie Hall’s Weill Café, ensuring strategic promotion and revenue optimization.
  • Offer expertise and recommendations to artistic partners and visiting presenters as needed.
  • Oversee marketing strategy, recruitment, and awareness-building for programs reaching families, educators, aspiring musicians, and communities.
  • Ensure that marketing plans and budget for education and social impact initiatives are audience-centered, data-informed, and developed in close collaboration with program leaders.
  • Partner with Marketing Analytics Manager to refine reporting, analyze campaign performance, and translate insights into actionable recommendations.
  • Ensure data-driven decision-making informs segmentation, targeting, creative development, and channel strategy.
  • Champion a culture of creativity, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Cultivate a positive team culture grounded in trust, communication, and shared purpose.
  • Provide clear direction, thoughtful delegation, and consistent feedback to support professional growth and high performance for a team of six, including four direct reports.
  • Establish strong workflows, role clarity, and accountability structures that enable the team to operate efficiently and collaboratively.
  • Model a solutions-oriented mindset and navigate shifting priorities, tight timelines, and evolving needs.
  • Cultivate strong relationships across departments, facilitating open communication, shared problem-solving, and alignment around institutional goals.
  • Represent Marketing in cross-functional planning meetings and special projects, ensuring marketing considerations are integrated early and effectively.
