Director, Marketing Technology Architecture

About The Position

As Director of Marketing Technology Architecture for the Fundraising and Marketing Technology Group (FMTG), you'll lead the technical strategy behind how the American Red Cross builds relationships with the millions of donors and blood donors it depends on. This is a new role, created because the organization is ready to move personalization and AI-driven marketing technology from concept to production — and needs someone who can turn that ambition into a tangible technical roadmap. You'll lead a team of four architects covering AEM, marketing communications (Adobe Campaign), fundraising systems, and analytics/personalization (Adobe Target). Business stakeholders know what they want — deeper donor relationships and more consistent giving. Your job is to show them how they get there: architect the systems, mentor your team to build working proof-of-concepts and get marketing leaders excited about what's possible. The work location for this exciting opportunity is virtual. The selected candidate will work 100% remotely from home and can be located anywhere in the United States but must work an east coast schedule.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in systems architecture or engineering.
  • 3 years in a direct staff management role.
  • Seven or more years working directly with analytics, audience management, and personalization technologies.
  • Five or more years of architecting CRM and marketing technology solutions within Adobe Experience Cloud (AEM, Adobe Campaign, Adobe Target, Adobe Analytics) or Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
  • Three or more years of experience developing applications with object-oriented programming or expertise in a modern scripting language.
  • Thorough understanding of the Generative AI landscape, including hands-on experience implementing systems leveraging LLMs.
  • Demonstrated experience with web application security, privacy, and data governance.
  • Background in cloud-computing and Data Warehouses, with preference given for work with the AWS platform.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a team in a collaborative environment.
  • Commitment to the non-profit sector and its values.
  • Qualified candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • The American Red Cross does not sponsor employment visas.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience with a customer data platform or journey-orchestration tool (e.g., Adobe Real-Time CDP, Adobe Journey Optimizer, Salesforce Data Cloud/Journey Builder) is highly preferred.
  • Experience working in an Agile delivery environment, preferably using the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical evaluation and integration of personalization and journey-orchestration platforms — including Adobe Real-Time CDP, Adobe Journey Optimizer, and integrations with our Salesforce Marketing Cloud ecosystem — and make the architectural case for the solutions that best fit our existing technology investments.
  • Identify opportunities to take advantage of existing investments in the Adobe Experience Cloud and marketing profiles to drive engagement across platforms.
  • Own service delivery for web personalization, translating business goals into insight-driven, actionable campaigns.
  • Build proof-of-concepts yourself, hands-on, that give marketing and fundraising leaders something real to react to — not just a roadmap slide.
  • Provide expert guidance on emerging tools and technology trends, and act as the technical translator between what the business wants and what is achievable.
  • Anchor the Fundraising Agile Release Train as a Systems Architect, working directly with senior leadership to realize value.
  • Lead the expansion of Generative AI across the organization's marketing technology systems, with strong attention to governance, safety, and sound technical design.
  • Guide architectural decisions as existing martech platforms increasingly incorporate LLM-driven capabilities.
  • Manage and mentor a team of four architects (AEM, marketing communications, fundraising systems, analytics/personalization), building a culture where proof-of-concepts — not just plans — drive decisions.
  • Own the department's technology architecture roadmap, working directly with business leaders to translate multi-year vision into deliverable increments.
  • Lead evaluation and selection of architectural standards, tools, and processes across the marketing technology stack.
  • Establish operating policies and procedures that affect departments and subordinate sections and work units.
  • Interpret company-wide policies and procedures.
  • Develop budgets, schedules, and performance standards.
