About The Position

The director, managing corporate counsel will lead a global team of legal and privacy professionals on matters relating to privacy, cybersecurity, AI, national security, and data governance. The role will define and execute the strategy for the team’s areas of accountability and develop the team to deliver on business objectives. This role involves proactively engaging with and advising senior executives, managing significant legal risks in a commercially pragmatic manner, identifying and anticipating highly complex legal and operational issues, and reaching broadly and impactfully across the organization.

Requirements

  • JD degree and active license to practice law in applicable jurisdiction(s).
  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant legal experience in privacy law, with a combination of law firm and in-house legal department.
  • Expertise in privacy and privacy-adjacent laws and regulations including U.S. state and federal laws (e.g., CCPA/CPRA and other U.S. states, CIPA, VPPA, PADFAA, relevant executive orders) and international laws and regulations (e.g., GDPR).
  • Expertise in privacy-by design and digital platform development, including advising on litigation and regulatory risk mitigation with demonstrated expertise in working with technology and engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated experience leading legal professionals including highly skilled and tenured attorneys, program directors, program managers, paralegals, analysts, and legal support partners.
  • Significant experience in incident response, and demonstrated experience in responsible AI governance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the comprehensive Starbucks global privacy program to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations while protecting brand integrity and consumer trust.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on privacy, cybersecurity and incident response, national security, artificial intelligence, emerging technologies (including digital platforms and ad technology), and data governance.
  • Support the design and development of privacy-compliant technologies and platforms, following privacy-by-design methodologies in compliance with global privacy and data protection laws.
  • Negotiate contractual terms related to data protection and information security in partnership with technology attorneys.
  • Provide leadership and timely updates on privacy laws, regulations, and best practices to privacy operations teams globally, including on privacy notices, impact assessments, data mapping, classification, retention, data subject access requests, and cross-border data transfers.
  • Manage regulatory inquiries and audits and build relationships with regulators.
  • Partner closely with Starbucks Cybersecurity to align on cybersecurity programs, vendor agreements, incident response, and designing and executing tabletop exercises/simulations.
  • Develop enterprise-wide policies and training on privacy, cybersecurity, data governance and national security, and responsible AI governance.
  • Participate in data use review and AI governance committees.
  • Advise senior executives on emerging legal and regulatory developments to inform actionable policy and operational adjustments.
  • Develop and implement solutions together with the business that anticipate and mitigate risks while achieving business objectives.
  • Manage and develop relationships with partners and outside counsel to create strategic and innovative solutions that address issues and achieve business objectives in a cost-effective manner.
