About The Position

The Director, Clinical Laboratory Operations reflects the mission, vision and values of Kettering Health. Under the direction of the Executive Director, this position is responsible for the activities of the laboratory and ancillary testing to include ensuring compliance with all regulatory, licensure, and accreditation requirements. This position is key in the planning, leading and organizing of activities related to quality patient care, laboratory function and human resource management. This position is responsible for financial management and has accountability for establishing and managing the operating and capital budgets. The Director is responsible for translating the hospitals and departments objectives, policies and procedures into effective action. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree with Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry or related field or master’s degree in Business Administration or Health Administration.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains a quality management system which allows for consistent evaluation and improvement of services and products in relation to physician and patient care requirements.
  • Documents all significant activities and takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Establishes ongoing quality data collection systems which enable monitoring of service levels.
  • Maintains knowledge and utilizes appropriate resources to provide regulatory, consultative, educational, technical, or informational services as needed to self, staff, physicians or patients.
  • Assigns personnel as required to accomplish quality management tasks.
  • Develops systems for improvement of the departments services provided in relation to physician and patient care requirements.
  • Communicates results of laboratory quality management processes to other departments as necessary to improve lab and organizational performance.
  • Ensures that the environment is clean, safe, and free from hazards for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Assures managers plan staffing requirements, hire to meet needs and schedules to ensure efficient management of resources and workflow.
  • Assists with development of talent across sections in technical/clinical and management positions through direct mentoring of development plans and succession planning.
  • Coaches and monitors managers and supervisors to ensure compliance with standards and performance.
  • Directs, in conjunction with Human Resources, the development of department recruitment and retention plan.
  • Meets targeted goals for specific turnover and vacancy rates.
  • Utilizes appropriate resources to implement section and hospital policies/procedures to include recruitment, employee relations and compensation.
  • Leads adherence to Human Resource standards for consistency throughout the department.
  • Assumes 24-hour accountability for quality of patient care, human resources, and overall function.
  • Develops department goals to support hospital and network objectives.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, local, AABB, FDA, ACHC, CAP, CLIA, multi-disciplinary, hospital regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Facilitates a collaborative approach to patient care and interdepartmental problem solving/service delivery.
  • Creates an environment of high morale and motivated professionals.
  • Assumes delegated management responsibilities in the absence of the Executive Director.
  • Partners closely with laboratory information system (LIS) in the planning and maintenance.
  • Develops operating budget, submits for approval and adheres to budget throughout the year.
  • Conducts variance analyses; identifies and explains trends in productivity, volume, acuity, or service.
  • Establishes programs to monitor productivity and control costs in relation to volume and financial goals.
  • Manages product evaluation.
  • Develops and participates in preparation of new program proposals.
  • Participates in the negotiation of pricing/terms for supplies and maintenance agreements.
  • Develops capital budget and submits for approval.
  • Develops major equipment purchase proposals and selection in collaboration with supply chain.
  • Develops and participates in facility changes and planning.
  • Works with Medical Directors in developing goals and objectives.
  • Assists and Supports Quality Management activities as directed by the medical staff leadership.
