About The Position

Connecticut Innovations (CI) is seeking a Director, Venture Team to support its Technology Fund. CI is Connecticut's strategic venture capital arm and a significant investor on the East Coast, with a diverse portfolio and a focus on life sciences, technology, and climate tech. CI invests in early-stage companies, provides follow-on capital, and invests as a Limited Partner in venture funds. Since 1995, CI has invested over $700 million, with a leveraging power of 10X. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, CI invested $45.8 million in 67 companies and funds, attracting an additional $653 million in outside capital. The organization fosters a vibrant, diverse, collaborative, and inclusive culture, with its New Haven headquarters serving as a hub for partnership and innovation. The Technology Fund specifically has invested over $140 million in Connecticut's high-tech companies, focusing on FinTech, InsurTech, SaaS, and PaaS. The role involves a hands-on venture capital experience in an innovative and collaborative environment, with the opportunity to make a significant economic impact on Connecticut.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with FinTech, InsurTech, SaaS, artificial intelligence, quantum, machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing and/or computer vision models and technologies.
  • Master's and/or higher degree in business or computer science. Minimum undergraduate degree in computer science or the equivalent.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Connecticut residency is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a founder or early-stage entrepreneur is highly preferred.
  • Startup/growth experience in a venture-backed, tech company is highly valued.
  • 5+ years of experience in venture capital, private-equity, and/or investment management in tech companies preferred.
  • Experience in investment origination, due diligence, deal execution, and portfolio company management preferred.
  • Experience in conducting market, product, competitive and valuation analysis in deep-tech companies preferred.
  • Knowledge of financial statements, business plans, and legal documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Executing investment strategy by researching and cultivating promising investment opportunities.
  • Participating in all phases of the investment process including sourcing, due diligence, meetings with management, company and industry research, financial modeling, and writing investment recommendations.
  • Monitoring portfolio companies post-investment.
  • Supporting portfolio companies on strategic growth initiatives.
  • Potentially serving as a board member or observer for portfolio companies.
  • Prospecting for new investment opportunities.
  • Conducting market, product, and competitive analysis on each potential investment.
  • Developing financial models and valuation assessments.
  • Collaborating with internal team members to structure, negotiate, and finalize deal terms.
  • Preparing reports and proposals regarding potential investments and portfolio companies.
  • Presenting investments for approval to CI advisory committees and committees of the CI Board of Directors.
  • Supporting portfolio companies by identifying strategic, marketing, and partnership opportunities to accelerate growth and value creation.
