About The Position

The Director, Integrated Communications provides strategic leadership and oversight for the SPCA of Texas’ integrated creative, content, digital, and public relations functions. Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing & Communications, this role ensures that all external communications, campaigns, and storytelling initiatives are strategically aligned, mission-driven, consistently executed, and measured for effectiveness. The Director serves as the primary architect and integrator of the organization’s communications strategy, translating institutional priorities into compelling, accurate, ethical, and effective public messaging and branding. This position works closely with Development, Operations, including Lifesaving Programs, Animal Welfare, Pet Resource Center, Animal Behavior, and all Veterinary Services, Animal Cruelty Investigations, People & Culture, the Customer Care Center, and Executive Leadership to support programmatic, fundraising, and organizational goals. This role works with the Vice President, Marketing & Communications on high-level strategic leadership while providing direct, hands-on management to the Integrated Communications team. The Director fosters a collaborative, high-performing, accountable team while protecting the integrity and reputation of the SPCA of Texas. The Director is a hybrid leader who can think strategically, manage people effectively, interpret performance data, and step into the work when needed to keep priorities moving with accuracy, quality, and care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, English, Public Relations, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of seven to 10 years of progressive leadership experience in strategic communications, marketing, and/or public relations, preferably in a nonprofit, animal welfare, healthcare, education, or mission-driven organization.
  • Demonstrated success leading integrated, multi-channel marketing and communications programs.
  • Proven experience managing creative, content, digital, and/or public relations teams.
  • Background in media relations, crisis communications, and reputation management.
  • Experience supporting complex programmatic work in regulated, sensitive, or high-risk environments.
  • Proficiency with digital platforms, content management systems, analytics tools, and social media management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, vendors, and external partners.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and editorial judgment skills.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and ethical judgment.
  • Commitment to the mission, values, and humane principles of the SPCA of Texas.
  • Ability to evaluate complex situations, make sound and ethical decisions, and synthesize organizational priorities into effective communications strategies.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience with or familiarity using Google Analytics 4, Meta, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, YouTube, Mailchimp, WordPress, Asana, Meltwater, and Microsoft Office 365 strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge and PetPoint for research, story verification, and cross-functional collaboration helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Vice President, Marketing & Communications on long-range strategy, risk management, departmental planning, and organizational alignment.
  • Lead the execution of comprehensive, multi-channel communications and marketing strategies aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Translate institutional goals into actionable plans for creative services, content production, public relations, digital platforms, and campaign support.
  • Establish priorities, workflows, and systems that improve efficiency, reduce reactive work, and strengthen proactive planning.
  • Monitor nonprofit, media, digital, and community trends to strengthen organizational visibility and engagement.
  • Partner with the Vice President, Marketing & Communications to develop, manage, and monitor departmental budget, ensuring responsible stewardship of organizational resources and alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Define, monitor, and report on key performance indicators for communications and marketing efforts, including earned media placements, partnership media placements, reach, quality of coverage, and message alignment.
  • Track social media audience growth, reach, engagement, and content performance across Meta, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, YouTube, and other relevant platforms.
  • Use website analytics, including GA4, to evaluate traffic, engagement, user behavior, and conversion indicators that inform content and digital strategy.
  • Evaluate content performance across blog, podcast, email, multimedia, and campaign platforms to guide strategic planning and continuous improvement.
  • Track storytelling pipeline performance, including stories identified, stories developed, stories used, and the strategic value of those stories across fundraising, program, public relations, and engagement channels.
  • Support accurate use of animal, client, donor, and program stories in digital and direct mail fundraising by ensuring stories are properly researched, documented, and aligned with organizational standards.
  • Monitor brand consistency, project delivery, internal client satisfaction, and reduction in reactive or misaligned work.
  • Assess public relations responsiveness, media outcomes, and issues management effectiveness.
  • Translate analytics and performance data into actionable insights, dashboards, and regular reports that guide short- and long-term planning.
  • Foster a performance-focused culture centered on accountability, continuous learning, testing, optimization, and achievement of meaningful metrics.
  • Serve as a steward of the SPCA of Texas brand, ensuring consistent voice, tone, visual identity, and messaging across all platforms.
  • Oversee the creation of mission-driven storytelling that reflects the organization’s values, impact, and strategic priorities.
  • Ensure all public-facing materials meet ethical, legal, and professional standards.
  • Protect and strengthen organizational reputation through thoughtful narrative framing, accurate information, and strong editorial judgment.
  • Strengthen the organization’s storytelling pipeline so stories are identified, documented, developed, and used strategically and efficiently.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for creative services, including graphic design, website management, visual identity, templates, and digital tools.
  • Ensure the organization’s website, digital assets, and visual materials are accessible, current, accurate, and aligned with brand standards.
  • Oversee the development of templates, design systems, and digital tools to support organizational efficiency and consistency.
  • Partner with the Senior Manager, Creative Services to support process flow, prioritization, and high-quality production standards.
  • Support effective use of WordPress and related digital infrastructure in partnership with internal team members and vendors.
  • Direct editorial strategy, content planning, and production across web, email, social media, print, podcast, video, and multimedia platforms.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of editorial calendars, campaign messaging, and content plans.
  • Ensure content reflects operational realities and accurately represents program work.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager, Marketing & Communications (Content) to strengthen storytelling, audience engagement, content performance, and strategic use of stories.
  • Support email and audience engagement strategy through tools such as Mailchimp while ensuring content aligns with broader organizational priorities.
  • Partner with the Manager, Public Relations to support coordinated execution of media relations, press outreach, proactive storytelling, crisis communications, and issues management.
  • Partner with senior leadership, legal counsel, and investigative teams on high-risk communications.
  • Use media monitoring tools, including Meltwater, to track media coverage, identify trends, assess coverage quality, and inform strategy.
  • Support strong media relationships and ensure accurate, timely, and thoughtful responses to media inquiries.
  • Collaborate with Development to support fundraising, donor engagement, stewardship initiatives, and accurate use of stories in donor communications.
  • Partner with Operations teams and the Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit to support program visibility, public education, and accurate information sharing.
  • Work with People & Culture to support internal communications initiatives.
  • Serve as a trusted communications advisor to departmental leaders.
  • Partner closely with the Manager, Customer Care Center to incorporate community insights, trends, and feedback into communications strategy, messaging, content development, and public education.
  • Incorporate Customer Care Center data and insights into performance analysis to identify trends, gaps in understanding, and opportunities to improve communication effectiveness.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing Integrated Marketing & Communications team.
  • Establish clear performance expectations, goals, accountability standards, and professional development plans.
  • Strengthen team performance through coaching, structure, follow-through, and consistent management practices.
  • Ensure work is completed with accuracy, timeliness, quality, and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Support succession planning and leadership development within the department.
  • Manage departmental workflows, timelines, and resource allocation.
  • Oversee effective use of Asana and other project management systems to improve planning, transparency, and accountability.
  • Partner with managers on vendor and agency relationships as appropriate.
  • Support crisis communications planning and emergency response efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, brand standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain documentation, playbooks, standard operating procedures, and institutional knowledge resources.
  • Actively engage with volunteers in such a way that provides support for volunteers and staff and proactively improves the volunteer program.
  • Be an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas, sharing the work and mission with friends and family and being knowledgeable of the various ways to support the organization’s work.
  • Produce regular reports outlining activity, performance, key learnings, and recommended next steps.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Serve as an occasional SPCA of Texas spokesperson for on-camera, newspaper, magazine, online, and live radio appearances as needed.
  • Represent the SPCA of Texas at events and functions, as required.
