The Director of Health Information Management supports the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of health information across the organization by applying RHIT/RHIA-level expertise in medical record management and HIM standards. It contributes to efficient hospital operations through collaboration with clinical, coding, and IT teams to improve documentation quality, data reliability, and regulatory compliance. The Director of Health Information Management role will be split between Haywood Regional Medical Center and Harris Regional Hospital.

Requirements

  • Current RHIT or RHIA certification in good standing required, demonstrating expertise in health information management standards and best practices.
  • Strong understanding of HIM principles, including medical record management, documentation standards, coding fundamentals, and health data integrity.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements including HIPAA, CMS guidelines, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Ability to analyze workflows and support process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and quality of health information.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across clinical, administrative, and technical teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and applicable HIM experience may be considered.
  • Experience in healthcare operations, hospital information systems, or clinical documentation processes within an acute care or similar setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for Health Information Management operations, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, regulatory requirements (HIPAA, CMS, Joint Commission), and enterprise-wide quality and patient care standards.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine departmental policies, workflows, and health information governance practices to support compliance, accuracy, and efficient hospital operations.
  • Partner cross-functionally with clinical, IT, compliance, and revenue cycle teams to optimize EHR functionality, strengthen clinical documentation improvement (CDI), enhance coding accuracy, and support reimbursement integrity.
  • Direct HIM operational functions including medical record integrity, coding, release of information, deficiency tracking, audit readiness, and quality improvement initiatives to ensure timely and accurate health information.
  • Lead performance management efforts using data analytics, dashboards, and quality metrics to improve efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and support hospital-wide decision-making.
  • Oversee staffing strategy including recruitment, onboarding, training, performance evaluation, and succession planning to maintain a skilled, responsive, and service-oriented HIM team.
  • Manage departmental budgets and resource allocation to ensure fiscal accountability while supporting operational demands and technology-driven improvements across the hospital system.
