About The Position

The Director of Health Information Management (HIM) provides enterprise leadership over the medical record lifecycle and health information governance, including document scanning, indexing and quality controls, data integrity (chart corrections/amendments), patient portal request support (e.g., MyChart), and release of information (ROI). This leader is accountable for record availability, integrity, privacy, retention, and defensibility to support patient care, billing and appeals, audits, and legal requests - while advancing standardization, automation, analytics, and vendor strategy. The Director partners closely with Clinical leaders, Compliance/Privacy/Legal, Information Technology (IT), Revenue Cycle, and Coding/Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) to improve data quality, reduce operational friction, and manage risk.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Informatics, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive Health Information Management (HIM) experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in a manager-, director-, or other leadership-level role.
  • One of the following certifications is required: RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician).
  • Demonstrated expertise in team leadership and talent development, coaching, mentoring, succession planning, and building high-performing teams.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI), Health Information Management (HIM), Revenue Integrity, Billing Operations, and Information Technology (IT).
  • Executive-ready communication skills, including written communication, verbal communication, facilitation and presentation skills, and executive stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong change leadership and continuous improvement mindset grounded in data, analytics, and performance outcomes.
  • Demonstrated enterprise governance capabilities across the entire medical record lifecycle.
  • Strong privacy, compliance, and risk management orientation with sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Proven operational leadership experience in high-volume service environments, time-sensitive workflows, and complex healthcare operations.
  • Deep knowledge of HIPAA privacy requirements, HIPAA security fundamentals, medical record disclosure practices, and Protected Health Information (PHI) management.
  • Strong command of record retention requirements, legal hold processes, audit response procedures, and healthcare documentation regulations.
  • Expertise in Release of Information (ROI) operations, medical record documentation standards, and defensible release workflows.
  • Working knowledge of document management systems, imaging and scanning workflows, indexing processes, record integrity management, and record corrections and amendments.
  • Familiarity with patient portal request support operations, Epic MyChart functionality, service recovery best practices, and patient-facing HIM services.
  • Experience with HIM automation technologies, vendor management platforms, and workflow optimization tools.
  • Strong analytics and reporting expertise, including the ability to monitor and manage throughput and turnaround times, operational backlogs, quality metrics, unit-cost performance, and operational efficiency measures.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, compliance, and leadership skills with a focus on operational excellence, information governance, patient privacy, and continuous improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in a complex hospital, health system, academic medical center, or multi-site healthcare environment preferred.
  • Preferred certifications include: CHPS (Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security), CHDA (Certified Health Data Analyst), or other relevant HIM, privacy, informatics, or healthcare leadership certifications.
