About The Position

Hunton Andrews Kurth is seeking a highly experienced Director of Government Affairs to manage Virginia legislative activities and lobby on behalf of our Firm clients. The successful candidate will advise on legislative and regulatory issues, coordinate client interactions with elected officials, and lead the development and execution of legislative strategies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of management experience required, preferably in a law firm, professional services, or other client relationship-based organization.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Strong commitment to client service excellence and teamwork.
  • Must possess the highest standards of ethical conduct and professionalism.
  • Must act as catalyst for change, drive and own results.
  • Creative and innovative.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written and listening) and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse group of professionals.
  • Sound judgment and flexibility.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, patience, diplomacy, high stress tolerance, excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to prioritize workload and adapt to changing conditions.
  • Visual acuity needed to process and read extensive written communications.

Responsibilities

  • Independently communicate with clients to advise on the status and impact of pending and proposed legislation.
  • Coordinate weekly legislative updates summarizing and analyzing legislative initiatives during sessions.
  • Recommend and assist in preparation and implementation of seminars on pending or adopted legislation and regulations.
  • Identify business development opportunities for practice groups and the Firm.
  • Maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct and professionalism.
  • Determine regulatory and legislative priorities impacting current and prospective clients.
  • Research, analyze, and monitor Virginia state legislative activities and coordinate firm involvement.
  • Lobby the Virginia General Assembly and Executive Branch on behalf of clients.
  • Formulate and implement legislative and regulatory strategies based on detailed research.
  • Attend House and Senate Committee meetings; identify and monitor legislation of client interest.
  • Advise firm government relations specialists, lobbyists, and lawyers on legislative initiatives.
  • Develop and execute grassroots and grasstops strategies at local, state, and national levels as needed.
  • Establish and maintain close professional relationships with elected officials, legislative committees, executive branch appointees, and relevant coalitions or associations.
  • Compile and evaluate requests for campaign contributions and advise clients and the firm's PAC.
  • Attend political campaign events on behalf of clients.
  • Conduct research on economic development initiatives, legislative activities, and regulatory processes.
  • Identify new client business development and expansion opportunities.
  • Monitor activities of boards, commissions, and executive branch actions impacting the firm’s practice.
