About The Position

The Director of Engineering for Care owns engineering strategy and delivery for clinician and patient experiences, from intake and consultation through prescription. The role leads development of clinical systems that balance speed with patient safety, regulatory compliance, and auditability. The director partners with product, design, data, clinical, pharmacy, and operations leaders; sets multi-year technical and organizational strategy; and develops engineering leaders. The Care engineering team builds provider- and support-agent-facing web applications and backend platforms for the integrated Care Platform and pharmacy operations.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, including 5+ years managing managers or multiple teams in high-growth environments.
  • Track record building and operating systems that handle clinical or other regulated health data, with working knowledge of HIPAA and compliance-driven design.
  • Experience owning end-to-end user experiences with cross-functional product engineering teams.
  • Strong grounding in modern service architectures, including Spring Boot, Kotlin, and PostgreSQL, and sound judgment to guide design decisions in depth.
  • Experience integrating third-party health and pharmacy systems, such as labs, e-prescribing networks, and pharmacy platforms.
  • Ability to define and execute technical roadmaps tied to product vision and business outcomes.
  • Strong communication skills and executive presence, including the ability to translate between technical, clinical, and business stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, develop, and retain high-performing engineering talent.
  • Comfort making risk trade-offs when patient safety and speed conflict.

  • Lead the shift to a durable domain model with clear boundaries and enforced contracts, moving teams from direct cross-domain database access toward APIs and published events.
  • Ensure the platform meets requirements for patient safety, clinical guardrails, security, HIPAA privacy, and state and federal regulations, including controlled-substance prescribing.
  • Set and uphold reliability standards, including SLOs and incident response, for patient-critical flows.
  • Lead the transition to an AI-first engineering culture, using AI-assisted development, review, and spec-driven workflows supported by measurable goals.
  • Build and mentor engineering managers and technical leaders, including succession planning and development of a strong technical bench.
  • Own staffing and organizational strategy, including hiring, headcount planning, and team structure as the domain evolves.
  • Drive alignment across teams and partners, managing trade-offs among speed, technical debt, and innovation.
  • Represent engineering in executive forums and communicate strategy, status, and risk to senior stakeholders.
