Director Engineering, Logistics

About The Position

Stord is seeking an experienced engineering leader to manage five engineering managers and a Principal Engineer within the Logistics Group. This role requires a leader who still thinks like an engineer, capable of understanding complex systems, making sound architectural decisions, and driving technical conversations. The ideal candidate will build strong cross-functional relationships, particularly with Finance and Parcel teams, and has a proven track record of leading engineering organizations through significant growth. The Logistics Group is central to Stord's platform, overseeing Billing, TMS, WMS, and LMS, which are critical for accurate billing, efficient freight movement, warehouse operations, and labor cost management across a global fulfillment network. This position offers the opportunity to lead critical initiatives like billing automation, the development of a standalone TMS system, network-wide efficiency improvements through LMS, and the scaling of the core WMS platform.

Requirements

  • Engineering depth, not just management experience.
  • Strong, hands-on engineering background with a solid understanding of R&D processes, languages, and technologies.
  • Ability to engage in technical conversations without writing production code daily.
  • Active problem-solving approach, jumping into hard problems yourself.
  • Ability to figure out why a team is stuck, not just wait for updates.
  • Cross-functional relationship building with partners like Finance and Parcel.
  • Organizational leadership at scale, having managed managers across multiple product domains.
  • Ability to drive consistency and standards across a multi-team organization.
  • Track record of driving business results (cost savings, revenue, delivery predictability).
  • Ownership & Accountability: Own outcomes, not just activities.
  • Strong Communication: Communicate clearly with engineers, PMs, and executives, translating technical complexity into business language and vice versa.
  • Delegation & Multiplication: Scale through people, develop team members, and multiply impact through others.
  • Navigating Ambiguity: Set direction when requirements are evolving and build alignment across teams and functions without formal authority.
  • Balanced Judgment: Balance innovation with pragmatic delivery constraints, knowing when to push for quality and when to ship.
  • Directed AI-Assisted Development: Understand how AI coding tools work as a productivity multiplier and guide team adoption while maintaining quality and independent technical judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading engineering in logistics, supply chain, fulfillment, or another high-throughput operational domain.
  • Direct experience partnering with Finance on billing, invoicing, or revenue-critical systems.
  • Experience scaling an engineering organization across multiple countries or regulatory environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to grow Engineers and improve team velocity.
  • Experience with transportation management, parcel/carrier systems, or warehouse labor management systems specifically.
  • Familiarity with high-growth, PE- or VC-backed environments where priorities shift quickly.
  • Prior experience standing up a net-new system (build vs. buy decision) inside an existing platform.

Responsibilities

  • Own performance and accountability across five engineering managers and a Principal Engineer, setting a clear bar for what good looks like on each team.
  • Coach managers directly, providing feedback, support, and stretch opportunities for growth.
  • Set a high bar and act decisively when individuals are not meeting expectations.
  • Enable people and avoid carrying underperformers.
  • Make organizational design decisions (team boundaries, reporting lines, role definitions) as the group evolves.
  • Partner directly with Finance leadership to drive the end-to-end automation of Stord's billing process.
  • Hold the Billing team accountable to a roadmap that reduces manual billing work and errors.
  • Surface and resolve cross-functional blockers in finance-engineering initiatives.
  • Own delivery of the standalone TMS system being built alongside the Parcel team.
  • Drive the TMS team toward cost-saving milestones and keep the long-term revenue opportunity in view.
  • Engage closely with the technical approach to catch problems early.
  • Drive the LMS roadmap toward measurable, network-wide reductions in warehouse cost-to-serve.
  • Connect LMS work to real operational outcomes by building relationships with warehouse operations leadership.
  • Prioritize ruthlessly between LMS features that impact cost and those that don't.
  • Own the technical health and roadmap of the core WMS powering Stord's fulfillment network.
  • Make platform investment decisions (reliability, performance, technical debt) to support international growth.
  • Ensure the team's execution is predictable for the rest of the business.
