About The Position

Porch Group is a leading vertical software and insurance platform focused on helping homebuyers move, maintain, and protect their homes. The company offers differentiated products and services, with homeowners insurance at its core. Porch Group aims to excel in the homeowners insurance market by providing superior services for homebuyers, leveraging advantaged underwriting, and offering comprehensive home protection. As a leader in the home services software-as-a-service (SaaS) space, Porch Group has established strong relationships with approximately 30,000 companies crucial to the home-buying process, including home inspectors, mortgage companies, and title companies. Porch Group became a publicly traded company in 2020, listed on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol PRCH. The company is in its early stages of growth and is seeking to build a significant enterprise. The Director of Engineering, Inspection will lead the global engineering organization for Porch's Inspection businesses. This role reports to the GM of Inspection and collaborates closely with Product, Operations, Sales, Customer Success, and Marketing leadership. The primary responsibilities include building reliable, scalable, and customer-centric software, defining engineering strategy, developing the team, overseeing technical execution, and ensuring operational excellence across the Inspection platform and associated systems. This leader will be instrumental in shaping the technology vision for Inspection, enhancing delivery speed and quality, and ensuring products and platforms support the growth of customers, inspectors, and partners. The ideal candidate will possess strong business acumen, comfort with ambiguity, clear communication skills, and the ability to lead through organizational change. Beyond leading their direct organization, this role will drive significant improvements in engineering operations within the Inspection domain and influence leaders across the company through thought leadership, operating model enhancements, and shared technology standards. A key focus will be driving the adoption of agentic AI—autonomous, multi-step systems requiring minimal human intervention—to boost delivery speed, software quality, and operational effectiveness. The role also involves establishing the necessary systems, standards, and metrics to link engineering outcomes to lasting business and customer impact.

Requirements

  • BS/BA in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree and/or MBA is a plus.
  • 15+ years of progressively responsible experience in software engineering and technology leadership.
  • 8+ years leading engineering teams, including managing managers and scaled organizations.
  • Proven success owning engineering strategy and execution for a major product area, platform, or business line.
  • Strong track record of leading teams through modernization, platform evolution, or significant operating change.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously, navigate ambiguity, and bring structure and momentum to complex challenges.
  • Experience with modern cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, APIs, and data-intensive platforms.
  • Hands-on experience designing and deploying agentic AI systems in production — autonomous workflows with real decision-making logic, tool use, and minimal human intervention — not AI-assisted developer tooling.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical leaders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in vertical SaaS, home services, real estate, inspections, or adjacent workflow-driven industries.
  • Experience with scheduling, routing, mobile tools, field operations software, partner integrations, or transaction-based platforms.
  • Experience leading engineering teams through modernization, platform simplification, or meaningful scale improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire engineering managers and engineers across multiple cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software experiences for customers, inspectors, and partners.
  • Own the engineering strategy, technical direction, and execution roadmap for the Inspection business, aligning investments and priorities to business outcomes and customer needs.
  • Partner closely with Product and cross-functional leadership to align roadmap decisions, delivery priorities, and resourcing with short and long-term business goals.
  • Provide technical leadership to build, scale, and evolve the Inspection platform, solving complex challenges across applications, services, integrations, data workflows, and multiple software stacks.
  • Drive high standards for architecture, code quality, reliability, security, observability, and performance, ensuring systems are resilient and scalable.
  • Champion agentic AI development across the engineering organization, setting standards for how autonomous systems are designed, deployed, and maintained in production.
  • Establish strong operating rhythms across planning, prioritization, delivery, incident management, and retrospectives to improve predictability and execution excellence.
  • Develop and cultivate strong relationships between engineering teams and cross-functional partners across the organization.
  • Attract, retain, and develop top engineering talent, including managers and senior individual contributors, while building clear career paths and succession plans.
  • Set clear goals and performance expectations, providing regular feedback and coaching to ensure high standards and sustainable results.
  • Lead through organizational change with steadiness, transparency, and strong judgment, introducing new operating models and practices where needed.
  • Improve engineering effectiveness through strong SDLC practices, data-driven decision making, and thoughtful tooling and process improvements.
  • Manage engineering budgets, headcount planning, vendor relationships, and resource allocation in support of business priorities.
  • Ensure systems and practices meet security, privacy, compliance, and business continuity requirements.
  • Help mature Porch's distributed engineering strategy, leading effectively in a fully remote environment.
