Director Engineering - AI/ML

Stanford Health Care•Palo Alto, CA
•$116 - $153

About The Position

Stanford Health Care and the Stanford School of Medicine are developing chatEHR, a secure, compliant generative AI platform intended to transform healthcare delivery, accelerate medical research, and improve patient outcomes. The Director of Engineering will provide hands-on technical leadership and strategic direction as chatEHR develops from a pilot into a reliable, scalable, tier 1 clinical platform used by clinicians, researchers, and staff. The role leads the platform’s engineering vision and delivery, including its core platform, agentic frameworks, user-facing applications, and APIs. The director will build and mentor an engineering and data science team, establish architecture and engineering practices, and translate AI research into production-ready clinical applications. The position works across engineering, clinical, product, research, and user-success teams, while ensuring the platform meets healthcare regulatory, privacy, and ethical AI requirements.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, including at least 5+ years in a senior leadership role managing software development teams.
  • Proven track record leading teams that built, deployed, and scaled AI/ML products.
  • Deep technical knowledge of modern generative AI, including LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, vector databases, and agentic frameworks.
  • Expertise designing and building scalable cloud-native systems using GCP, AWS, or Azure, and container orchestration with Kubernetes.
  • Strong experience with API design, microservices architecture, CI/CD, and MLOps principles.
  • Ability to mentor engineers, set technical direction, and manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical and clinical audiences.
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, AI, or a related engineering field (required).

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Computer Science, AI, or a related field.
  • Direct experience in healthcare, biotech, or life sciences, particularly with HIPAA, FHIR, or GxP.
  • Experience building applications on EHR systems such as Epic.
  • Published AI/ML research or contributions to major open-source projects.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, lead, and mentor software engineers and data scientists, fostering innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence.
  • Partner with clinical and product leaders to define and execute the chatEHR technical roadmap in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Ensure AI applications comply with HIPAA, data privacy laws, and ethical AI standards.
  • Oversee the architecture and design of a scalable, secure, reliable generative AI platform integrated with existing EHR systems and clinical workflows.
  • Lead the design and development of an agentic framework that supports rapid creation and deployment of AI-powered workflows.
  • Manage development of chatEHR user-facing applications and publish platform APIs for enterprise-wide use.
  • Manage concurrent development streams and releases, ensuring timely delivery and quality standards.
  • Implement and oversee MLOps practices, including generative AI evaluation techniques in collaboration with the Chief Data Science Officer and GUIDE-AI lab members.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison between the engineering team and the Chief Data Science Officer’s lab, translating research into production-ready platform features.
  • Work with product management, user success, clinical staff, and researchers to identify and prioritize high-impact generative AI opportunities.
