About The Position

The Emergency Department Director at Sentara Leigh Hospital is accountable for the 24/7 daily operations, clinical effectiveness, strategic planning, and budget management of the emergency unit. The Director leads a team of ER nurses, technicians, and support staff to ensure high-quality, efficient patient care aligned with Sentara Healthcare’s mission.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.
• Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Minimum of 3 to 5 years of acute care nursing experience, with significant leadership and supervisory experience in an Emergency Department setting.
• Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily ED operations, patient flow, and throughput to maintain target wait times and short lengths of stay.
• Partner with hospital leadership to implement evidence-based practices that improve clinical outcomes, regulatory compliance, and patient satisfaction.
• Mentor, recruit, and retain clinical staff by modeling a professional practice environment.
• Develop, monitor, and manage the departmental budget, including purchasing, payroll, and resource utilization.
• Coordinate care for urgent and emergent cases, including supporting the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance landing pad on campus.
