About The Position

The Director, Early Childhood Education (ECE) provides support to all District early childhood education programs. The Director, ECE supervises and assists the early education center principals on matters related to instructional leadership, supervision of certificated and classified staff, and adherence to District and state policies. The director also provides technical assistance and support to the regional offices and elementary school principals related to the early childhood education programs.

Requirements

  • At least eight (8) years of successful, full-time public school service in a certificated position(s), with no fewer than two (2) years of which must have been in a leadership position(s) (e.g., coordinator, instructional coach, dean)
  • A valid California Administrative Services Credential (Out-of-state candidates must qualify for and obtain a California credential prior to selection approval.)
  • An earned master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard conferred by a regionally-accredited college or university
  • Completion of required Multicultural Education and Master Plan coursework

  • Knowledge of current practices in early childhood education

  • Experience with computer and basic software programs and District applications
  • Management experience in early childhood education programs
  • Understanding of the instructional needs of English learners, Standard English learners, students with disabilities, students identified as gifted, students of various languages and cultures, and socioeconomically-disadvantaged students
  • Effective organizational and management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with all racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, linguistic, and disability groups
  • Ability to interpret and use data for the purpose of improving student achievement and informing instruction
  • Ability to use technology for data collection and analysis for reporting, teacher improvement, and to promote instructional proficiency for all students
  • Understanding of experience with District observation and feedback tools to promote improvement.
  • Ability to travel to various sites within LAUSD

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, provides guidance and support, and evaluates early education center principals
  • Develops and implements professional development to early education center and elementary principals within the regional offices to include curriculum, assessment, instruction, operations, and on capacity building of teachers and support personnel
  • Provides training and support to early education center principals in order to create and sustain a school climate that is safe and secure and promotes positive interactions between adults and children and children and their peers
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with District, state, and federal requirements for early childhood education programs
  • Assists the early education center and elementary principals in establishing partnerships with parents and community, as needed, and in addressing parent questions and concerns
  • Coordinates the expansion of early childhood education programs and projects
  • Perform other duties as assigned
