About The Position

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President of Beach Building Services, the Director, Design and Construction Services (DDCS) is responsible for the overall leadership, direction, and coordination of the design and construction of all major and minor capital projects. The DDCS is also responsible for the environmental, regulatory, and fiscal capital planning functions for capital projects from inception through completion of construction. Beach Building Services (BBS) at California State University Long Beach is dedicated to supporting the university by ensuring the safe operation, maintenance, and development of the campus. As a large, thriving department, BBS provides facilities based comprehensive support to the campus in the areas of academics, activities and event services. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction management OR related field and ten years of progressively responsible full-time work experience in a related field required. Equivalent experience (or combination of education and experience) in project management, architecture, engineering or construction management will be considered as a substitution for a degree on a year for year basis.
  • Minimum five years supervisory experience required, preferably in higher education.
  • Previous higher education or institutional project management experience required.
  • Valid CA Driver License required.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.

  • The successful candidate possesses thorough knowledge of California building, construction, maintenance, and repair regulations, including state building codes, fire codes, ADA requirements, and industry standards, as well as a strong understanding of construction methods, building costs, and public works contracting.
  • They demonstrate proficiency in interpreting blueprints and specifications, working knowledge of CAD/Revit applications, and expertise in managing multiple projects simultaneously while working independently and remaining highly organized and self-motivated.
  • The ideal candidate is skilled at representing the division professionally with the Chancellor’s Office and external agencies, advocating for campus facilities needs and design and construction priorities, and effectively engaging with executive leadership and a broad range of stakeholders within a shared governance environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in related field preferred.
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED AP) Certificate preferred.
  • Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the leadership and the independent executive management of the Design and Construction Services staff, projects, department budget and consultants. Serve as Campus Leader for Design and Construction Services.
  • Develop, coordinate, implement and communicate the strategic vision for the Design and Construction Services Department.
  • Responsible for managing the selection processes for Architect/Engineer, Contractor, Design-Builder and any other consultants that are to be involved in Projects. Responsible for ensuring that capital procurement processes are performed according to policy and regulation.
  • Develop and implement campus design standards and construction guidelines, ensure adherence to general industry standards, including SUAM, CSU and audit guidelines. Develop a quality control program to constantly improve DCS processes and project delivery methods.
  • Facilitate development of design and project/construction management processes that ensure that projects are completed on time, on budget, and in accordance with the SUAM, building codes and other regulations, and industry best practice.
