About The Position

The Specialty Product Design and Modeling Team is responsible for the science of pricing for Liberty Mutual's Specialty Lines products, including Landlord, Umbrella, Condo, Renters, and Specialty Vehicles. This team utilizes advanced predictive analytics and statistical modeling to develop and refine rating programs that drive profitable growth. The team also plays a strategic role in determining key variables, sourcing data, and designing rating programs to provide a competitive advantage. The Director II, Data Science is a frontline management position reporting to the Specialty Senior Director. This role involves representing Specialty Data Science in the Frontier Program, a major transformation of US Retail Markets Personal Lines onto a modern Unified Insurance Platform (UIP). The Director will translate Specialty rating program expertise into requirements for the platform build, ensuring the science of pricing is preserved and correctly implemented. Additionally, the Director will own the pricing design and modeling for Condo and RV programs, aiming for best-in-class segmentation and market competitiveness. The role also includes advancing the science of Specialty pricing through research into new modeling techniques, evaluation of novel data sources, and improvement of segmentation, contributing to high-impact research across the Specialty portfolio. A key aspect of the role is people leadership, managing, coaching, and developing a team of 3-5 data scientists to foster a high-performing culture.

Requirements

  • Deep knowledge of predictive analytic techniques and statistical diagnostics of models.
  • Expert knowledge of predictive toolset, to include highly technical tools.
  • Proven ability to lead and drive projects and assignments to completion through others, to include prior experience effectively managing talent.
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, verbally, visually (presentations and exhibits), and in writing, consistent with the audiences and stakeholders with which s/he interacts.
  • Ability to establish and build relationships within and outside the aligned functional area or SBU.
  • Ability to give effective training and presentations to management and other groups.
  • Presents to senior or functional department leaders or executives.
  • Broad knowledge of business drivers and market context.
  • Has a value driven perspective with regard to understanding of work context and impact.
  • Competencies typically acquired through an advanced degree (in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science or other relevant field of study) and 5 to 7 years of relevant experience or may be acquired through a Bachelor`s degree (scientific field of study) with 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Insurance or financial services industry experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own Specialty's voice on Frontier: ensure our requirements are heard, documented, and built correctly across a multi-year transformation
  • Become the expert on all Specialty rating programs: coverages, rating structures, data definitions, and pipelines
  • Own end-to-end pricing design and modeling for Condo and RV programs
  • Connect the dots across Product, Technology, Delivery, and Actuarial teams: keep work moving and surface problems early
  • Research emerging modeling techniques, test new variables, and identify data sources that sharpen our competitive edge
  • Contribute to high-impact modeling and analytical work across the Specialty portfolio
  • Tell the story: communicate complex technical work clearly to senior leaders and cross-functional partners
  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of 3–5 data scientists
