About The Position

The University of Miami/UHealth department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Director, Data Science to work at the UHealth Medical Campus. The Director, Data Science assists the senior director to oversee the development and deployment of technology-based resources to promote systemwide optimization and standardization of clinical practice, service models and patient care throughout all UM patient care settings: acute inpatient, ambulatory, and tertiary care. Responsible for leading process improvement and data science teams; performs complex queries to extract meaningful and actionable data, using the system data analytics tools. Presents data in a clear, easily interpreted manner, to make evidence-based business decisions that are focused on adding value to UHealth. Responsible for collaborating with information technology professionals and senior leaders to recommend and facilitate the implementation of data system processes and information technologies that impact quality performance for clinical departments, clinical service lines, and interdisciplinary high-performance teams, in order to meet the information needs of the decision makers. Provides data, oversight and guidance with transitional research and multiple research projects. This position will lead the Computational Precision Medicine efforts for the Sylvester Myeloma Institute. Beyond guiding the daily work of, and, the incumbent will serve as the technical anchor for the wider team, driving high-impact publications first, then building the computational infrastructure needed to validate our discoveries. This role is to bridge the gap between 'research' and 'clinic,' creating the AI tools that will define the future direction of our program. This role requires high-level autonomy and vision, complementing the (i.e. Dr. Landgren’s) role as Clinical Director. While the SMI Director will define the clinical objectives, this position will provide the strategic Artificial Intelligence (AI) landscape and domain expertise required to execute them. Alongside authoring the technical innovation sections of our grants, also leads to high-level collaborations with external clinical/AI/translational collaborators. Position will have several direct reports that will support these initiatives. The incumbent will be responsible for supervising (hiring, managing, evaluating) these positions. The plan is to have a team of 5-10 members in the coming 2-3 years. The incumbent will successfully spearhead the development of novel predictive and prognostic models for precision medicine with a primary focus that has been on academic validation—building these complex AI models to answer specific research questions and disseminating the findings through high-impact, first-author publications. The Director will focus on expanding from developing models for academic publication to institutionalizing them for clinical care. The position will be leading the computational roadmap for the entire Sylvester Myeloma Institute, identifying new clinical questions, designing validation studies, and driving the translation of our AI tools into the clinic. Additionally, it will expand from contributing to grants to authoring the technical innovation strategy for major funding applications and architecting the foundational AI infrastructure that will scale his expertise across the wider department. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience required

Responsibilities

  • Conducts initial assessments and data analyses to identify and quantify/qualify recommended opportunities for improvement.
  • Serves as a business change agent leading process re-engineering activities/project.
  • Manages cross-functional projects end-to-end (E2E) that are specific to new or existing processes to address cost, quality and/or delivery (CTQs) aligned to business strategy and goals.
  • Develops, documents and/or improves process maps/flows, best practices, Key Performance Indicators (KPI) scorecards, and toolkits; provides recommendations for Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to support post-implementation.
  • Develops, manages, and reports progress of initiatives using process improvement tools such as Quality Functional Deployment (QFD), current and future state Value Stream Maps and project management tools, leveraging industry vs. business standards, policies, and best practices.
  • Implements Lean Six Sigma methods to design and roll-out standard processes and improve effectiveness by measurable efficiencies, higher productivity and/or capacity.
  • Facilitates, develops, and documents the appropriate approach and tools per department to ensure continuous improvement culture; Conducts post-implementation assessments to measure impact of initiatives.
  • Develops machine learning predictive analytics models by applying advanced statistical and computational method to solve more complex issues.
  • Supports innovation by developing novel methodologies and tools for support UHealth.
  • Supports translational research and takes existing projects/initiatives and convert them into academic papers; Delivers insights and recommendations in compelling presentations for an executive audience and conducts other training and/or team support as assigned.
  • Works with stakeholders throughout the organization to identify opportunities for leveraging company data to drive business solutions.
  • Extracts data and performing segmentation and statistical analyses on data sets.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert when evaluating products in the realm of artificial intelligence.
  • Manages team, budget, and project staffing assignments while overseeing all work product, quality, impact, and internal customer satisfaction.
  • Supports UHealth Analytics Education Group, which aims to provide education/networking opportunities across the medical campus.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
