Director, Data Architecture & Engineering

Zing HealthRemote, IL
$190,000 - $200,000

About The Position

Zing Health is seeking a strategic and hands-on Director of Data Architecture & Engineering to lead the evolution of our enterprise data platform and data management capabilities. This is a player-coach leadership role (approximately 40% strategy and leadership, 60% hands-on architecture and design) responsible for modernizing our data platform using Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, and Azure data services; enabling data governance and quality standards; and creating a trusted, AI-ready single source of truth for the organization. Partner with Analytics & Reporting to maintain the enterprise semantic layer, certified data products, and governed business definitions. Serve as the technical owner of the enterprise data platform and semantic architecture while participating in a cross-functional governance process that establishes and ratifies canonical business definitions across the organization. Success in this role requires a unique combination of technical depth, strategic thinking, operational discipline, and delivery accountability. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable defining enterprise architecture, mentoring engineering teams, and driving execution of complex data initiatives that deliver measurable business outcomes.

  • 10+ years in data architecture, data engineering, or data management, with 5+ years of leadership experience managing technical teams and enterprise initiatives.
  • Experience in enabling Data Governance for an Enterprise is a must.
  • Required experience within Managed Care, Health Plans (Medicare Advantage preferred), Healthcare Technology, or Provider organizations.
  • Strong familiarity with healthcare data models and interoperability standards (e.g., EDI/X12, FHIR, APIs).
  • Strong understanding of healthcare data and data quality controls.
  • Proven track record designing enterprise data warehouses, dimensional and operational data models, and building ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Data Services.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server and Power BI Semantic Models.
  • Experience with AI design with—or a clear roadmap strategy for migrating legacy pipelines into—Microsoft Fabric is highly desirable.
  • Experience integrating and managing data across enterprise healthcare platforms including Salesforce, FHIR APIs, operational systems, and cloud-based data ecosystems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading distributed onshore/offshore teams and executing data governance/quality frameworks.
  • Excellent communication skills to translate technical infrastructure into business outcomes.

Nice To Haves

  • Medicare Advantage experience, including support for Quality, Stars, Risk Adjustment, Value-Based Care, Claims, Enrollment, or Provider operations.
  • Experience enabling AI initiatives, including building data foundations, semantic layers, and governed data products that support machine learning, generative AI, intelligent automation, and self-service analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain foundational data management capabilities, including the enterprise data dictionary, business glossary, metadata catalog, data lineage, and data quality standards.
  • Lead data governance programs, stewardship models, and engineering best practices that enable consistent business definitions, certified data products, and a single source of truth across the organization.
  • Lead the migration of legacy data integration and warehouse solutions (e.g., SSIS, SQL Server) into a modernized ecosystem utilizing Azure Data Services and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Ensure platform scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Partner closely with Analytics & Reporting, business stakeholders, and the enterprise data governance forum to define and ratify canonical business definitions, semantic models, and data quality rules.
  • Establish trusted, governed, and reusable data assets that enable a single source of truth for operational reporting, advanced analytics, generative AI, intelligent automation, machine learning, and future AI-driven initiatives.
  • Lead, mentor, and establish accountability metrics for distributed onshore and offshore data engineering teams.
  • Actively participate in technical design, architecture reviews, and complex problem resolution.
  • Own delivery outcomes for data modernization, platform engineering, and strategic data initiatives, ensuring commitments are delivered with quality, predictability, and business value.
