About The Position

Relay is seeking a Director of Corporate Communications to own the external growth narrative and corporate communications infrastructure during a pivotal growth phase. This role reports to the VP of Marketing and is responsible for shaping the company's external voice, managing PR relationships, leading content marketing, and driving executive visibility. The ideal candidate will be a builder who can architect a scalable communications function from Series B through IPO and beyond. This position is based in Raleigh, NC, and requires a strong understanding of the technology sector and experience in high-growth environments.

Requirements

  • 8–10+ years of progressive experience in corporate communications, public relations, or journalism.
  • At least 3–5 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience leading communications at premier high-growth public or private technology companies, particularly through Series C, pre-IPO, or IPO milestones.
  • Proven experience shaping, naming, or advancing a market category.
  • Proven experience as a trusted advisor to CEOs, CFOs, and other C-suite leaders.
  • Ability to ghostwrite in executive voices, challenge thinking, and improve executive communication skills.
  • Deep, active relationships with top-tier business, technology, and vertical media (Industrial, Healthcare, Hospitality a strong plus).
  • Track record of landing coverage that impacts pipeline, talent, and valuation.
  • Experience building or scaling a content marketing function.
  • Understanding of SEO, narrative architecture, and content distribution.
  • Experience leading companies through crises with calm, clarity, and judgment.
  • Affinity for data in communications (share of voice, sentiment, narrative penetration, content performance) and using it to sharpen strategy.
  • Bias for action and thriving in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Owner mentality with extreme ownership and accountability.
  • Experience building and developing high-performing teams (in-house staff, agencies, freelance networks).

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field required.

Responsibilities

  • Own Relay's external growth narrative and corporate communications infrastructure.
  • Architect and advance Relay's corporate narrative, focusing on Connected Worker, category leadership, and market proof points.
  • Translate complex product, financial, and operational information into a clear market story.
  • Own the PR relationship and earned media engine, serving as the primary media contact.
  • Build and manage agency and freelance partners, drive press release strategy, and handle media inquiries.
  • Proactively secure coverage in relevant publications, podcasts, and stages.
  • Rally cross-functional executive leadership to align around a single external narrative.
  • Draft thought leadership, shape executive points of view, and prepare spokespeople.
  • Lead the Content Marketing function, including strategy, team, and operating cadence.
  • Build the voice of influence to establish Relay as the authority on the Connected Worker.
  • Set the thought leadership roadmap and partner on sector-specific narratives.
  • Drive integrated executive visibility and thought leadership through bylines, podcasts, conferences, and social platforms.
  • Lead crisis communications and reputation management, designing contingency plans and serving as a spokesperson.
  • Operate internal communications as a strategic lever to drive employee engagement.
  • Instill public-company communications rigor, including disclosure discipline, messaging governance, and IR-adjacent communications.
  • Measure communications KPIs and translate data into actionable insights for leadership and the board.
  • Scale, mentor, and develop a high-performing corporate communications and content marketing team.
