About The Position

The Memorial Medical Center Foundation (MMCF) raises and stewards philanthropic support for Long Beach Medical Center (LBMC) and Miller Children's and Women's Hospital (MCWH). Reporting to the Executive Director of Administration and Operations, the Controller is responsible for providing management, direction, and oversight of all financial activities at MMCF. Financial activities include, but not limited to, financial reporting/general accounting, investment portfolio oversight, external audit management, tax compliance and tax return preparation, budgeting, general forecast and variance analysis, planned giving/deferred gift analysis/support, maintenance of internal controls, and support of financial reporting systems. The Controller will also build sustaining relationships with Memorial Health System (MHS) financial staff and ensure compliance with MHS system-wide financial standards, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years’ finance experience preferred.
  • Minimum 4 years’ leadership experience preferred.
  • Previous nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Blackbaud Finance Edge experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or related field required.
  • Master of business administration (MBA) preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support the mission, vision, and values of LBMC, MCWH, and MMCF, and actively work to enhance the reputation of LBMC and MMCF.
  • Works with MMCF executive management and directors to strategically plan and implement key MMCF financial initiatives.
  • Provides financial analysis, insight and guidance within strategic planning.
  • In conjunction with MMCF executive management, and key input from Chief Financial Officer of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, develops and designs fiscal objectives for the MMCFs in harmony with MHS fiscal objectives.
  • Ensures all activities adhere to non-profit Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial accounting standards.
  • Provides accurate financial statements in a timely manner to all required system executives, relevant Boards, and Committees.
  • Monitors levels of revenue, expenditures, receivables and payables.
  • Oversees and carries out monthly/daily general accounting, account reconciliation and journal entry preparation.
  • Assists in providing design, format, and direction of MMCF standard operational/performance reports.
  • Directs use of MMCF standard operational/performance reports to facilitate overall operational improvement and executive decision making.
  • Monitors overall investment performance to ensure short-term/long-term investment strategies are met, within the guidelines of MMCF Investment Policy Statement.
  • In conjunction with MMCF executive management and Investment Committee, works to ensure each portfolio is managed prudently, with fiduciary responsibility, to ensure all areas of investment risk are addressed and managed appropriately.
  • Manages and directs financial activity within all operating accounts while maintaining appropriate cash flows for capital and program support to each campus.
  • Acts as liaison to all contracted investment management firms, and banking relationships.
  • Manages and provides direction to complete the annual audit in a timely manner without material adjustments or restatements to financials; obtains a clean, unqualified opinion from external audit firm.
  • Informs the MHS Audit Committee and MMCF executive management of all potential material audit issues and provides recommended solutions to mitigate risk.
  • Acts as liaison to contracted audit firm.
  • Manages and provides direction to complete MMCF annual tax return, trust tax returns, and all other required compliance filings, accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Manages and prepares the annual revenue and expense operating budget in conjunction with MMCF executive management.
  • During each fiscal year, manages and provides direction on variance analysis, all budgetary issues, and provides recommendations to mitigate financial risk.
  • In conjunction with MMCF development staff, manages and provides direction to provide all necessary, and/or required, analysis of existing, matured, and proposed planned/deferred gifts.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with Long Beach Memorial Medical Center Chief Financial Officer and Finance Executive Director to ensure accurate intercompany reporting of grants and operating expenditures.
  • Effectively communicates financial position to all relevant Board and Committee members.
  • Advises the MMCF President and Executive Director of Administration and Operations of all potential and actual financial issues that may impact the organization's strategic initiatives, financial goals, compliance, or legal standing.
  • Tracks and reports out on various finance and accounting metrics.
  • Interacts with national or international accounting professionals focused on charitable fundraising to resolve problems with industry scope, determines standards and best practices, and exchanges state of industry information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
