About The Position

The Director, Compliance Advisory Services is a senior leader within the Compliance organization, responsible for setting strategy, overseeing execution, and ensuring the effectiveness of Golden 1 Credit Union’s Compliance Advisory function, including management oversight of the BSA team and the BSA/AML and Sanctions compliance program. The role provides second line oversight and independent, credible challenge to the business while serving as a trusted advisor to executive leadership. This position ensures regulatory expectations are embedded into enterprise decision making and that Golden 1’s Compliance Management System (CMS) operates effectively across the organization. The Director leads managers and subject matter experts responsible for Fair Lending, Privacy, HR Compliance, Records Management, BSA/AML and Sanctions and serves as a key regulatory facing leader during examinations and supervisory activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 12+ years of experience as a Financial Services experience in consumer protection regulatory compliance, BSA/AML and Sanctions compliance, internal audit, external audit, financial services operations, or consumer protection compliance program development/evaluation.
  • 10+ years supervisory experience with an emphasis on financial services, including experience managing compliance and/or BSA/AML teams.
  • Extensive knowledge of compliance laws, rules, and regulations, including BSA/AML and Sanctions regulatory requirements and supervisory expectations.
  • Demonstrated excellence as a strategic thinker and leader in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate compliance and business leaders, fostering a culture of collaboration and shared success.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to synthesize complex compliance issues into concise and impactful business cases with clear recommendations.

  • Certification preferred, but not required; Credit Union Compliance Expert (CUCE), NAFCU’s Certified Compliance Officer (NCCO), Certified Bank Compliance Officer (CBCO), Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM), Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), Certified Global Sanctions Specialist (CGSS).

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, execution, and continuous improvement of Compliance Advisory services across deposits, lending, Fair Lending, Privacy, HR Compliance, Records Management, BSA/AML, and Sanctions.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive Fair and Responsible Banking framework.
  • Set annual Compliance Advisory priorities aligned with enterprise risk assessments, regulatory focus areas, and strategic initiatives.
  • Integrate compliance considerations into enterprise initiatives, including new and modified products, services, delivery channels, technologies, and material operational changes.
  • Prepare and present executive and governance level compliance reporting and insights.
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for the BSA team, including oversight of BSA/AML and Sanctions regulatory priorities, program execution, and alignment with enterprise risk objectives.
  • Provide second line leadership oversight of Golden 1’s Advisory compliance risk management framework and Compliance Management System (CMS), including regulatory change management, compliance risk assessments, policy governance, training, complaint intelligence and issues remediation, and BSA/AML and Sanctions governance activities.
  • Assess CMS effectiveness and maturity; identify systemic gaps, trends, or emerging risks; and escalate material concerns to senior management and governance committees.
  • Partner with first line teams and other second line functions to strengthen compliance risk ownership, ensure effective execution of CMS components, and reinforce accountability.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and translate regulatory requirements into practical, risk aligned guidance for business leaders.
  • Serve as a key regulatory facing leader during assigned examinations, audits, and supervisory matters, including matters involving BSA/AML and Sanctions.
  • Oversee regulatory responses and management action plans; challenge remediation strategies to ensure durability, root cause resolution, and risk reduction.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop Compliance Managers and senior compliance professionals, fostering accountability, collaboration, and regulatory expertise.
  • Manage leaders with teams as well as specialized individual contributors, including Fair Lending, Privacy, HR Compliance, and Records Management, BSA/AML, and Sanctions.
  • Promote continuous learning, professional development, and succession planning within the Compliance Advisory function.
  • Oversee performance management, staffing, and resource planning for the team.
  • Collaborate with business units, Enterprise Risk Management, Legal, Technology, and senior leadership to align compliance strategies with business objectives.
  • Serve as a key escalation point for compliance matters related to initiatives, risk acceptances, vendor relationships, and policy exceptions.
  • Provide documented compliance opinions on significant initiatives and escalate matters where risk exceeds approved risk tolerance.
  • Lead the content creation and revision of policies, procedures, and internal controls to align with current regulations and industry best practices.
  • Develop compliance training content to ensure understanding and adherence to applicable regulations.
  • Drive efficiency, consistency, and improved member experience through process optimization and technology enablement.
  • Define and monitor compliance key risk indicators (KRIs), trends, and root cause analysis to proactively identify emerging risk.
  • Deliver actionable insights to executive and governance forums to support informed decision making.
  • Ensure control activities align with the Credit Union’s risk appetite and compliance expectations.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of the pertinent regulatory requirements and risks inherent to job responsibilities, establish, and maintain control activities that mitigate those risks consistent with the Credit Union’s risk appetite, and ensure operational integrity and compliance with applicable regulations.
