The Director, Center for Biospecimen Research & Development (CBRD) will lead the business, operational, and service-delivery functions of the institutional biorepository and biospecimen processing facility. This role collaborates with the CBRD Medical Director and Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs to ensure efficient, compliant, and high-quality biospecimen operations supporting research across the health system.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in business, healthcare administration, public health, life sciences, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in biobanking, laboratory operations, core facilities, or research administration, specifically in leadership.
  • Strong financial management experience, including budgeting, pricing, and cost recovery models.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams in a regulated laboratory or research environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in process improvement, operational scale-up, and performance management.
  • Knowledge of biospecimen workflows, laboratory operations, and service delivery models.
  • Familiarity with CAP, quality systems, and accreditation environments.
  • Strong project management and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, administrators, and technical staff.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in business, healthcare administration, public health, life sciences, or related field.
  • Experience in an academic medical center, comprehensive cancer center, or large institutional biorepository.
  • Experience supporting tissue procurement and/or pathology-integrated biospecimen programs.

Responsibilities

  • Direct day-to-day operations of the CBRD including biospecimen acquisition, processing, storage, distribution, staffing, workflow optimization, capacity planning, and operational KPIs.
  • Directly supervise and develop the Assistant Director of CBRD and Senior Manager of Quality Control with dotted-line oversight of the Director of Histology and IHC to ensure alignment of operational priorities, quality standards, and service delivery across CBRD functions.
  • Lead project intake, feasibility review, service scoping, and operational resource planning for new studies, including equipment, facilities, supply chain, and infrastructure needs.
  • Develop and manage pricing models, charge structures, utilization tracking, financial performance, and related business cases, annual plans, and leadership reports.
  • Partner with the medical director on strategy, investigator relations, and institutional alignment.
  • Ensure effective implementation of SOPs, process controls, service standards, and quality measures, including monitoring client satisfaction and turnaround times.
  • Manage coordination of the Biospecimen Research Committee (BRC) review for proposed external transfers of human biospecimens, ensuring appropriate institutional routing, documentation, and alignment with applicable policy requirements.
  • Oversee maintenance and periodic review of the institutional Policy on Human Biospecimen Research, including coordination of updates to reflect evolving operational, regulatory, and institutional requirements.
  • Serve as business owner for the LabVantage biospecimen laboratory inventory management system (LIMS), overseeing operational use, workflow optimization, stakeholder coordination, and alignment with institutional biospecimen tracking requirements.
