The mission of the Business Risk team is to enable safe and sustainable growth for Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB). We achieve this by managing risk effectively, safeguarding both HSBC and our clients, and empowering our teams to excel. Our approach aligns risk management with business strategy, invests in our people through coaching and development, and enhances efficiency by streamlining processes and embracing automation. We are seeking a Director to join the Business Risk team, overseeing Credit and Capital Management (CCM) activities within the relevant region (Americas) across all pillars across CCM Services and the Business Credit Office (BCO). CCM is on a multi-year transformation across systems, people and processes.

Requirements

  • Have a strong understanding of lending products and credit risk. Ability to identify both existing and emerging risks that will impact our ability to service our clients
  • Have familiarity with the lending journey, from origination, due diligence, credit approvals, client and portfolio monitoring and distribution
  • Be aware of the external environment, including regulatory, compliance, ESG and political factors
  • Have previous experience in risk management within a complex, multicultural organisation
  • Ability to present complex issues clearly and confidentially to executives and regulators, using straightforward language suitable for a global audience
  • Have an exceptional relationship management, collaboration, and influencing skills
  • Proven decision-making ability, especially under pressure
  • Experience building senior relationships through effective communication, influence, and negotiation

Responsibilities

  • Drive and implement a consistent, forward-looking approach to end-to-end risk management, both regionally and globally, in line with HSBC’s risk management framework
  • Collaborate closely with Business Risk teams and CCM teams across regions, providing senior subject matter expertise in areas such as Operational Risks, Regulatory Compliance, Resilience, and Financial Reporting Risk, ensuring we meet the expectations of regulators, stakeholders, and shareholders
  • Provide daily oversight on risk and control matters, and constructive challenge to business leaders and risk owners
  • Deliver a robust Business Risk agenda in a complex regulatory environment, supporting sustainable growth and increased technology adoption at pace
  • Ensure proactive management of both financial and non-financial risks, adhering to the CCM organizational design and Business Risks framework
  • Be a key contact point for escalations within the region, ensuring visibility of the issues and facilitiating remediation if needed
  • Drive the automation and simplification of the end to end control framework protecting CCM processes and products
  • Oversee day-to-day risk operations, ensuring the adoption of globally consistent policies and practices across CCM and sub value streams in the region
  • Work with Global, Regional and Market CCM Leadership to manage compliance with all relevant policies, laws, and regulations, including local regulatory requirements and changes
  • Work with the Global CCM Business Risk Team to align with global strategy, collaborating with regional stakeholders across the CCM and CCM COO including Business Credit Office, Transaction Services (Operations), Product Management, Design and Innovation, Data Management and Control, Sub Value Stream Transformation Teams, Strategic Origination, Balance Sheet Velocity and Portfolio Management
  • Establish and lead governance frameworks to ensure that risks and issues are understood, escalated and resolved appropriately
  • Facilitate the management of Risk Assessments, Control Monitoring, Issues and Actions, ensuring timely and effective remediation
  • Ensure comprehensive end-to-end risk and control coverage including ensuring key processes are demonstrably resilient
  • Support audit & MSII read across and identify areas where a consistent remediation approach can be applied across the region/globe
  • Drive audit recommendations and maintain satisfactory audit outcomes across CCM in the region
  • Support and develop training and education for the Business Risk team and CCM on risk matters
  • Oversee risk management, audit, and control governance matters, ensuring frameworks and escalation paths are clear and effective
  • Identify and proactively manage risks related to changes in services, products, processes, and systems
  • Oversee the production of risk and control management reports, presenting findings and recommendations to senior audiences
  • Promote awareness and engagement in risk activities, ensuring risk is considered in all decision-making
  • Educate management on the overall health of the control environment
  • Develop and implement a strong people strategy, ensuring team engagement and support
  • Deliver efficient processes and engagement models across CIB and CIB COO
  • Partner with and constructively challenge risk oversight functions, Internal/External Audit, third-party control owners, and Risk Stewards
  • Assess and build the capabilities required to enhance the risk and control environment across CCM in the region
  • Lead, motivate, and inspire a team of risk specialists
  • Manage relationships with Regional Leadership Teams
  • Lead risk and control activities across CCM
  • Make decisions that uphold and enhance HSBC’s values and reputation
  • Serve as a role model for a positive internal risk and control culture
  • Provide thought leadership and foster a positive people agenda
  • Engage with peers in the global and regional teams to share best practices and tackle and solve shared problems through collaborative working. While regional in focus, there are opportunities to deliver change/capabilities globally
