About The Position

The Director, Business Development, leads the Montréal office’s business development strategy, market positioning, and profile-enhancing efforts. Working closely with office leadership, practice group leaders, and colleagues across the Firm, the successful candidate will help drive growth, strengthen the Firm’s market presence, and translate market intelligence into actionable strategies and initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, law or a related field; an MBA, JD, or other advanced degree is a strong asset
  • 10 years of progressive experience in business development, strategy, or a related field, ideally within a law firm or professional services environment, including leadership experience
  • Demonstrated experience conducting market research and competitive intelligence using tools and resources such as Capital IQ, Lexpert, Chambers and comparable league tables and databases
  • Experience using data analytics and emerging AI tools
  • Proven ability to develop and execute business development and growth strategies
  • Knowledge of the Canadian and U.S legal markets including cross-border transaction flow is a strong asset
  • Bilingual written and spoken (French and English) given the clientele, mandates and international scope of the Firm
  • Demonstrates executive presence and the ability to build credibility with and influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Provides leadership that attracts, develops, and retains top talent while fostering a culture of high performance and excellence
  • Combines strategic thinking and analytical rigor to translate data into actionable plans
  • Strong project-management skills with the ability to lead complex initiatives and collaborate effectively across multiple stakeholder groups
  • Acts as a trusted advisor to professionals, providing coaching, guidance, and constructive challenges to drive results
  • Demonstrates strong work ethic, discretion, sound judgment and professionalism

Responsibilities

  • Drive the Firm’s external legal recognition through directory and awards submissions (e.g., Chambers, The Legal 500), evaluating opportunities to enhance market recognition and visibility
  • Lead the submission process in collaboration with lawyers, clients, referrals, and internal stakeholders
  • Partner with Marketing to promote the Firm's brand, reputation, and market positioning
  • Own and continually enhance the pitch, proposal, and RFP function to deliver tailored, high-quality, and persuasive submissions
  • Oversee and maintain the Firm’s business development infrastructure, including experience and matter database, capability statements, credentials, and rankings
  • Develop and support the Firm's business development strategy
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing business development team
  • Lead broader business and professional development initiatives, including the alumni program, community involvement and industry conferences
