About The Position

As a trusted leader in architecture, building envelope consulting, and façade restoration, we partner with clients to preserve and enhance New York City’s iconic skyline. Our team brings deep technical expertise and a commitment to excellence across every phase of design, inspection, and construction administration. We’re seeking a Director, Architecture, to lead a studio of professional Architectural and Engineering staff. In this role, you will oversee project quality, staff development, team productivity, and studio profitability while serving as a key liaison between the studio and the Management Team. You will also manage your own portfolio of projects, functioning as Project Manager for approximately 25% of your time. This is a strategic, people‑focused leadership role that shapes team culture, elevates technical delivery, and advances company initiatives.

Requirements

  • 12–15+ years of experience in architecture, engineering, or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading teams, managing staff performance, and developing technical talent.
  • Strong project management expertise, including budget development, scheduling, and client coordination.
  • Proficiency with project management and design tools; adaptable to evolving technologies.
  • In‑depth knowledge of NYC Building Codes and industry standards.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in façade restoration, building envelope consulting, or exterior rehabilitation.
  • Professional licensure (e.g., RA, PE) or relevant certifications.
  • Experience conducting or overseeing work at heights (supported and suspended scaffolding).
  • Background in forensic investigations, historic preservation, or complex restoration.

Responsibilities

  • Direct studio staffing, workload balance, and resource planning.
  • Build a collaborative, high‑performing team culture.
  • Develop talent through coaching, feedback, and growth planning.
  • Support recruitment and onboarding as needed.
  • Oversee and approve key deliverables to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Provide senior technical guidance across restoration, envelope, forensic, and rehabilitation project types.
  • Engage specialists and senior leadership when needed to elevate technical outcomes.
  • Partner with Project Managers on budgets, schedules, and contract understanding.
  • Monitor project performance, profitability, and billing progress.
  • Assist with reducing Aged Accounts Receivable.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance Studio efficiency and workflow.
  • Champion HLZAE’s mission, values, and standards.
  • Communicate studio performance, priorities, and team insights to the Management Team.
  • Participate in strategic discussions and contribute to companywide initiatives.
  • Serve as Project Manager for selected projects (approx. 25% of the role).
  • Support business development and promotional efforts as needed.
