Director, Applied AI

Board of Innovation•New York, NY

About The Position

BOI is an AI partner to enterprises including Walmart, Coca-Cola, and Mastercard. It rebuilds how work gets done around business outcomes, using agents to perform work while people retain judgment and directing freed capacity toward growth. The Director, Applied AI owns the quality and end-to-end delivery of complex client engagements, from business case and proposal development through rebuilding work processes, deployment in client systems, and measuring value. Working closely with the Managing Director of Applied AI, this senior leader shapes what BOI sells and delivers, and ensures clients receive clear information to support decision-making and execution. The role partners with clients from the C-suite through working AI capability: defining functional outcomes, structuring business cases, and leading work from design to launch and measured value. It calls for a practical, simplifying approach; experience building and deploying AI products for real users; an understanding of the gap between demos and production; and daily use of AI.

  • Experience leading complex engagements and distinguishing workable solutions from ideas that only sound good in presentations.
  • Ability to move quickly from strategy to product.
  • Takes ownership and responsibility beyond assigned role, moves work forward independently, and remains resourceful amid ambiguity.
  • Confident but grounded approach, including owning mistakes, inviting critique, sharing credit, and improving the team.
  • Learns quickly, thinks clearly, and simplifies complexity.
  • Commercial acumen, including growing accounts by shaping problems and structuring credible proposals, and understanding how senior buyers evaluate value, risk, and feasibility.
  • Passion for understanding problems and building AI solutions.
  • Has built personal workflows, tools, or automations and uses AI daily.
  • Experience building and deploying AI products for real users and understanding the difference between a demo and production.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end delivery of complex, multi-workstream AI programs, from problem framing through build, deployment, and measured value.
  • Define the outcomes a team exists to deliver, map the work behind those outcomes, and design roles in which agents do the work and people own the judgment.
  • Structure engagement approaches, set direction, define executable top-down roadmaps, and establish production-focused standards for success.
  • Run product discovery with client teams and end users; identify the outcome to rebuild, define the first release and success metrics, and decide what to cut.
  • Shape solution architecture across models, clouds, and platforms, and recommend defensible build, buy, or configure decisions.
  • Navigate ambiguity, make decisions, and keep work moving without waiting for direction.
  • Shape client agendas, manage complex stakeholder dynamics, and grow relationships through delivered outcomes.
  • Structure proposals, scope engagements, and shape commercial strategy.
  • Identify account expansion opportunities grounded in delivered work.
  • Turn successful engagements into case studies, thought leadership, and reusable intellectual property.
  • Champion AI-first ways of working through daily practice and build tools and workflows.
  • Lead, coach, and develop team members across multiple engagements; set high standards, give direct feedback, and share credit generously.

Benefits

  • Competitive package with perks and regular team gatherings.
  • Freedom to prototype, experiment, and push boundaries with AI.
  • Opportunity to build a growing company like an owner.
