This job will come with a generous salary depending upon experience and performance bonus, benefits, PTO and 9 paid holidays per year.  This position will oversee the whole division, and travel will be a necessity Job Summary: The Director of Ambient Monitoring owns the operational performance and commercial growth of the company’s ambient monitoring service line (~$5M in revenue). This leader sets strategic direction, drives revenue growth, and ensures flawless project delivery—all while forging tight cross-functional partnerships with field services, consulting, laboratory analysis, and software/data teams to deliver a seamless, end-to-end value proposition for clients.

  • Deep working knowledge of EPA ambient monitoring methods (e.g., 40 CFR Part 58, TO-series, IO-series, PM methods) and associated QA/QC requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in ambient environmental monitoring, with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing operations, teams, and budgets.
  • Demonstrated track record of growing a services business—achieving revenue targets, winning new accounts, and expanding client relationships.
  • Experience managing field teams, instrumentation fleets, and subcontractor relationships across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Must be able to meet physical demands such as: Consistent standing or walking Consistent bending, crouching, or stooping Climbing ladders and/or stairs
  • Use of tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity
  • Ability to distinguish between shades of color
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in industrial environments
  • Ability to discern odors and have normal olfactory and auditory sensitivity

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or professional certification (e.g., QEP, CHMM, PE) in a related field preferred.
  • Experience in a multi-disciplinary environmental services firm that combines field services, laboratory, consulting, and data/software capabilities preferred.
  • Familiarity with fenceline monitoring (e.g., EPA Method 325), community air monitoring, and real-time data telemetry systems preferred.
  • Experience with water quality, noise, or odor monitoring programs preferred.
  • Computer skills – intermediate to advanced proficiency in Word, Excel, Adobe, Outlook, Google Earth, Salesforce, and data management platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Owns P&L performance for the ambient monitoring service line, including revenue targets, margins, utilization, and cost management.
  • Oversees project planning, resource allocation, field mobilization, and QA/QC to ensure on-time, on-budget, and compliant delivery of monitoring programs.
  • Establishes and continuously improves standard operating procedures (SOPs), health and safety protocols, and quality systems aligned with EPA, state, and client-specific requirements.
  • Ensures proper calibration, maintenance, and deployment of ambient monitoring instrumentation and equipment fleet.
  • Develops and executes a growth strategy to expand the service line’s revenue, market share, and geographic reach.
  • Serves as a senior client-facing representative: participates in proposals, presentations, contract negotiations, and key account management alongside business development teams.
  • Identifies and pursues cross-selling and upselling opportunities by packaging ambient monitoring with field services, laboratory analysis, consulting, and data/software solutions.
  • Monitors market trends, regulatory developments, and competitive landscape to inform service innovation and pricing strategy.
  • Build and maintains relationships with regulators, industry associations, and strategic partners to generate referrals and strengthen the company’s market position.
  • Collaborates with Field Services leadership to optimize crew scheduling, equipment logistics, and multi-service project delivery.
  • Partners with Laboratory Analysis teams to align sampling protocols, chain-of-custody processes, turnaround times, and analytical methods with client expectations.
  • Works with the Consulting practice to integrate monitoring data into compliance reports, risk assessments, and strategic advisory deliverables.
  • Coordinates with Software/Data teams to leverage the company’s data capture and reporting platform, enhancing real-time data delivery, dashboards, and client self-service capabilities.
  • Champions a “one company” approach, ensuring clients experience a unified, coordinated engagement across all service lines.
  • Serves as an internal subject matter expert on ambient air quality monitoring methodologies, instrumentation (continuous monitors, passive samplers, optical methods, etc.), and regulatory frameworks.
  • Stays current with evolving EPA methods, NAAQS revisions, state implementation plans, and emerging contaminant monitoring requirements.
  • Provides technical review and sign-off on monitoring plans, QAPP documents, and final deliverables as-needed to meet program
  • Supports ancillary services (water quality, noise, odor monitoring) as client needs dictate, ensuring appropriate technical resources are in place.
  • Supports the use of Salesforce by adding to customer information and contact base via relationships developed through business development activities.
