About The Position

This position is responsible for directing the work of a team of actuaries, long term projects and work streams or for providing insight and guidance to long term projects and work streams that require unique skills; setting or participating in setting the strategy for success in the area; and developing compelling written and oral presentations that drive the delivery of information for high-level decision making. Must also possess and demonstrate an expert level understanding of actuarial concepts, multiple actuarial areas and at least one business segment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Economics. Other Bachelor (or higher) Degrees may be considered.
  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and Membership in the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). In place of attainment of FSA, 4 years of actuarial experience in the health insurance field at the ASA level may be substituted.
  • Compliance with all the membership requirements for each professional designation.
  • At least 7 years of actuarial experience in the health insurance or related field.
  • Verbal and written communications skills to prepare effective documentation, facilitate training and development, and participate in presentations.
  • PC proficiency to include Word and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting Individual and Small Group health insurance products including level-funded products
  • Knowledge of ACA market dynamics, risk adjustment, rate development, product strategy, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the appropriate modeling is being done and that the team continues to develop technically.
  • Develops and drives the strategy for the most appropriate tools, technology and resources for the team to use.
  • Complies with, monitors their staff for compliance with, and ensures that their areas have appropriate monitoring in place for all applicable compliance requirements and Actuarial Standards of Practice.
  • Communicates effectively across the company and with external parties.
  • Ensures that the appropriate information is making its way to all levels of the organization.
  • Has ability to recommend a course of action based on 360 view of the business and develop compelling written and oral presentations that clearly drive the delivery of information for high-level decision making.
  • Determines strategies to develop and improve key relationships in the areas and with external areas.
  • Determines all areas where key relationships should exist.
  • Understands actuarial concepts, multiple actuarial areas and at least one business segment all at expert level.
  • Directs the work of a team of actuaries and possibly non-actuaries.
  • Manages long term projects and work streams.
  • Sets the strategy for success in the area.
  • Manages and develops a team of Managers and potentially some analysts.
  • Supports, guides and prepares managers for difficult conversations with staff.
  • Drives and demonstrates a continuous improvement culture in the department.
  • Overseeing the annual budget and allocating resources for various projects and operational needs.
  • Translating needs and initiatives into compelling business cases.
  • Conducting cost-benefit analyses to justify investments and ensure ROI.
