About The Position

GHD is seeking a Project Director specializing in building envelope expertise and restoration/renovation of existing vertical building envelopes. This role also involves new construction projects, including participation in the envelope commissioning process. As a building envelope consultant within the Building Science team, you will work on diverse projects for clients in the residential, institutional, commercial, and industrial sectors. You will lead a team, communicate with clients and contractors, and conduct diagnostic studies or work on active construction sites. The position is based in the Greater Montreal area with a hybrid work model, supported by GHD's network of offices across Canada and internationally. Multiple office locations are available: Downtown Montreal (PVM), Saint-Laurent, Laval, or Brossard. You will be supported by a multidisciplinary team including team leads, project managers, project coordinators, site technicians, certified thermographers, and other professionals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Building Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or Architecture.
  • Over 10 years of experience in building science.
  • Member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec or the Ordre des Architectes du Québec.
  • Experience in preparing facade and/or multi-story parking inspection reports (as per Quebec's Régie du bâtiment law 122).
  • In-depth knowledge of construction materials and processes for building envelope design and/or repair.
  • Experience in estimating repair costs.
  • Knowledge of the different stages of the building envelope commissioning process.
  • Experience with technical and technical-legal expertise on building envelopes.
  • Good knowledge of the National Building Code.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of key concepts, systems, tests, and standards related to building envelopes in Canada.
  • Proficiency in client relations and professional judgment (organizational skills, managing expectations and client approach, prioritizing, managing deliverables vs. budget, etc.).
  • Experience in preparing proposals and service offers.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Aptitude for teamwork with the ability to delegate and mentor junior staff.
  • Good computer skills and technological proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Outlook, OneDrive, OneNote).
  • Hold the ASP Construction card.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and a vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • LEED or BEEx certification will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in Property Condition Assessment (PCA) for clients wishing to know the condition of their buildings will be considered an asset.
  • Heat transfer simulation and condensation risk assessment skills (THERM, WUFI software, etc.) will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Studies: Drafting and supervising technical study reports.
  • Engineering Standards Specifications: For existing projects, reviewing and drafting technical deliverables (plans and specifications) for renovation projects. For new construction projects, contributing to the establishment of criteria, standards, test types, and control protocols from the design phase.
  • Engineering Inspections: Supervising the quality control of construction or rehabilitation work during implementation. Participating in the quinquennial facade inspection mandate.
  • Engineering Expertise: Acting as a building envelope consultant to ensure performance and durability, including for litigation cases. Analyzing the physical condition of buildings as an expert in technical-legal evaluation for existing projects.
  • Envelope Commissioning Agent: Serving as the commissioning agent for various stages of the building envelope commissioning process, participating in drafting and reviewing technical study reports, daily reports, and test reports.
  • Contract Management: Administrative management of contracts for building rehabilitation or construction projects. Clearly defining mandate limits and coordinating subcontractors.
  • Client Management: Meeting with clients, following up on requests, and preparing service proposals.
  • Project and Team Management: Responsible for planning, collaboration, execution, budget tracking, and deadline management. Ensuring staff availability and supervising collaborators' work.
  • HSE: Adhering to corporate requirements for employee health and safety and quality control.
  • Personal Capacity Building: Developing personal capabilities through evaluation and development planning, formal and informal training, and coaching. Obtaining or maintaining external professional accreditation. Staying informed about technology, external regulations, and industry best practices through continuous learning, conferences, and specialized media.
