About The Position

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) at Southeastern Virginia Training Center (SEVTC) provide person-centered care and behavioral support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This role is considered essential personnel and requires flexibility in shifts and potential overtime. DSPs assist individuals with daily living activities, personal care, and mobility, while utilizing behavior management strategies and implementing behavior intervention plans. The goal is to foster independence, promote a safe and positive environment, and ensure individuals can live to their full potential. SEVTC is an intermediate care facility operated by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS), committed to supporting individuals in state-of-the-art homes.

Requirements

• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Must be dependable, accountable, and reliable
• Must have ability to work a flexible schedule
• Must have ability to work with an integrated team
• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
• Must have active, valid driver’s license
• Must have basic computer skills to include the ability to use keyboard, mouse and navigate an Electronic Health Record with minimum assistance after training
• Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job with or without reasonable accommodation, which includes standing, bending, walking, pushing/pulling, lifting up to 50 pounds, providing support during all aspects of daily personal care, and intervening with aggressive behaviors
• Successful completion of the facility’s Pre-Service training program, which includes CPR, First Aid, medication administration, nutritional management, and physical/behavioral management, is required for continued employment
• Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers, Residential Supervisors and/or Supervisors, Administrator on Duty (after hour supervisors) and ID team members

Nice To Haves

• Prior experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and other disabilities
• Prior experience working with medically fragile individuals
• Prior experience as a Direct Support Professional, a Certified Nursing Assistant, or similar role
• Demonstrated experience working with electronic medical records

Responsibilities

• Assist individuals with daily living activities, personal care, and support for mobility.
• Utilize behavior management strategies to support individuals exhibiting maladaptive behaviors.
• Provide emotional and behavioral support while promoting independence.
• Implement behavior intervention plans and work collaboratively with a support team.
• Foster a safe, structured, and positive environment.
• Work in the event of an emergency or facility need.
• Work different shifts and/or overtime as requested.
