The Direct Support Professional (DSP) role is crucial in assisting individuals to maximize their strengths, interests, and abilities while upholding their personal rights. This position involves providing emotional support, building positive relationships, and supporting individuals in meeting their personal goals for a high quality of life. The DSP engages in respectful communication, encourages socialization, and facilitates community connections. A key responsibility is the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals at all times, ensuring adherence to program guidelines, facilitating fire safety training, and identifying and escalating potential harm to self or others. The role also focuses on ensuring health, wellness, and safety through appropriate supervision and crisis management, adhering to all applicable policies, procedures, and regulations. Support is provided in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing skills for individuals with diverse needs and adhering to DDD Standards. The DSP ensures the implementation of person-centered plans, including Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Individualized Service Plans (ISPs), and Staff Action/Life Plans. Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment, utilizing safe handling procedures, and implementing infection control protocols are also essential. The role involves assisting with personal care, ADLs, hygiene, teaching skills, communication, self-expression, dispute resolution, ethical decision-making, meal preparation, and transportation for appointments and activities. The DSP will also assist with financial management, medication administration, inventory, and scheduling medical appointments. Operating agency vehicles, developing understanding of specialized clinical knowledge, implementing behavior support plans, collecting and summarizing data, and reporting changes in behavior are also key duties. The DSP will communicate with circles of support, serve as a team member, complete trainings and certifications, review communication logs, and maintain electronic health records. Paperwork and documentation compliance, utilizing teaching skills, understanding behavior as communication, reporting maintenance concerns, and consulting with leadership are also part of the role. The DSP may participate in treatment plan development and must comply with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA. Performs all other duties as assigned.
